IIRC, a lot of WNBA players play in Russia. It's surprisingly one of the better-paying women's leagues and I think offers more flexibility than playing in Western Europe. With the new sanctions and cases like this though, that may change.

I'm kind of surprised the NBA hasn't gotten involved. The WNBA is technically a separate league but is pretty much financially held up by the Association...I think with the hope it would get more girls into playing and watching basketball (similar to what the MLS did in 90s for soccer). Either way, Silver has some clout here and also a vested interest in seeing one of the better WNBA players getting home safely.

This basically means nobody in America really watches the wnba even though espn tries to put it on as much as possible

Also, I don’t think people really care about Britney Griner. They don’t relate or emphasize with her. Mainly they don’t know who she is.

It’s not like she’s as popular as Billie Ellish or Rihanna

Lots of entitled people don’t have common sense

it’s debatable if she even is held without merit .
Break any laws especially drug laws in foreign countries, you’re screwed.

If anyone of us did that we’d be screwed

I'm not surprised the NBA didn't get involved. They probably could care less about her. She doesn't make them money.

The Phoenix Mercury's coach said that LeBron would already be home if he was in Griner's position. Perhaps, but LeBron would never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever put himself in that position. And there are other Americans in Russian prisons that have been there for years that no one talks about. So Griner is benefiting from her celebrity as well.

Are the other Americans there for hash oil or a similarly harmless offense?

No clue. Doesn't matter. It's likely that they are detained over a crime that we may not have on our laws and/or whose punishment we wouldn't believe fits the crime.

Yeah the 'If I was LeBron' scenario only works for 1 person on this planet.

    LeBron.

The logic being thrown out at this Britney Griner case is historically bad

I think the severity of the offense does matter. Curious what they would be.

THE RECAST: Did it come as a surprise that Brittney Griner pleaded guilty to drug charges in a Russian court?

ST. JULIAN-VARNON: I think from an American perspective, it is surprising. But in the context of the Russian system, it makes total sense as a strategy.

In the Russian legal system, the conviction rate is well over 97 percent and when you’re facing those odds, I think her legal team’s strategy is: Plead guilty early so as to not drag out the proceedings. You don't have to have the state show all the evidence, and the hope is that you will get some leniency in the sentencing part of the trial. And that may happen on the next court date on July 14. So from the Russian legal system, it makes total sense to do that.

No can emphasize with Griner unless they got caught sneaking in drugs or CBD into another country where it's illegal.

She's not getting the baby Jessica treatment because the majority of the public is not captivated by her situation.

It’s harmless regardless of their laws. If their law for this harmless crime was the death penalty, should we not care about that either because she somehow deserves whatever punishment they dictate because she did not show sufficient respect for the national anthem?

it's their laws so you have to respect them even if you don't agree with them.
When you don't respect laws in a foreign country you go to jail there.
    @King1

You can shoplift $900 in California and it be considered a misdemeanor. You won't go to jail.
Do that in Saudi Arabia or China. See what happens.

It doesn't matter if she doesn't like that national anthem. That won't factor in Russia.

It does factor in sympathy brownie points. Let's just say @King1 has sympathy for her.
    That does nothing.

That's like scoring 100 points on NBA2K, that means nothing in a real game.

I’m not disagreeing that people should follow the laws of whatever country they are visiting, unless they have a very, very good reason not to (she clearly didn’t in this case).

Doesn’t mean one shouldn’t have concern for someone’s welfare when the punishment they are facing doesn’t meet the crime.
