And this mindset of the current leadership is another reason why the Stros most likely won't be winning a championship again. But you're right it's probably a fantasy. There's a new regime running things and we should all have lowered expectations. You wouldn't be sitting Contreras more than a day or two a week. What do you think they would have to give up to get a rental like Contreras? Leon and Dubin should get the job done. Trade for Contreras and use the money that you would get from Brantley to re-sign Contreras.
We are talking about arguably the best team in the league. Contreras just does not belong. He is not very good now and projects to get worse from this point forward.
Look, I'm in the camp that Contreras is not in the cards for the Astros right now and I love me some Maldy. But to say he is not any good right now is just wrong, especially when compared to the offensive struggles the Astros have had this year at the catching position.
David Peralta can be added to the list of players likely to be traded. He’s a guy I thought might’ve been a fit for Houston in years past but I don’t think he’s a good fit now, although he’s a pending free agent and depending on how things shake out he might be a logical target to replace Brantley next season.
Reports were that we were trying to get Dubon since before the season. It's likely that the FO sees him as the replacement for Diaz next year. I wouldn't count on him being traded As for Bell as a long term 1B replacement for Yuli, I would be shocked if we were the high bidder for a 1B bat on the free agent market
Lol, wouldn't mean they are fragile. You obviously don't understand how pitchers and catcher work I would guess you probably feel that Maldanado is terrible because he doesn't hit, but honestly, I don't care how you feel about Maldanado, you ain't pitching for the Astros
Absolutely, my comment was towards those who just want Maldanado replaced, and Yuli replaced, and to trade away a couple of our starters Idiocy
Yea the most likely senario where we traded for Contreras would be if Brantley is more seriously injured that we know about and we plan on playing Yordan more in LF and Contreras could DH and C a couple of times a week Just like trading for Reynolds though, it's very unlikely
I'm just not sold on needing to make a move. Josh Bell would probably be #1, Wilson Contreras #2, Bryan Reynolds #3, and a dominating reliever #4 on my would trade for if the price is low enough. I just doubt any will be available for a price I'd be willing to give up. I'm not in favor of trading Brown, Lee, Whitley, or Diaz for a rental. Leon & Barber maybe. Not really attached to other prospects. Would only give up Meyers in a Reynolds deal. Would trade McCormick/Siri for a rental, though I love Chas as the team's 4th OF.
The construction of the OF the next several years is going to be interesting. Yordan has proved he can be a very good fielder. The only reason to not play him every day is that he is such a big man that he could get tired running around and his bat is just THAT valuable. Meyers has impressed the organization and I have really liked what I see. I hope his arm comes back after his shoulder injury but so far it's not good. Despite being a great defender in CF, that could shift him to LF. RF is Tuckers for at least 3 more seasons. Hopefully they can extend him. After initially thinking his arm would move him to LF, if guys like Leon with better arms come up. He has proven me wrong. McCormick is a perfect fourth OF. He is solid if not good at all aspects of the game but not great at anything and he can play all 3 positions with above average defense. He could be a starter on a lesser team but not a contender like the Astros. I expect him to be traded but am happy with him as 4th. Pedro Leon: He is slowly improving his K rate at AAA which is the only thing keeping him down. If he can reduce his Ks even down to 25-26% he could be a star CF for years. Colin Barber: He has been compared to Alex Bregman in makeup. A sweet LH swing with developing power. Likely moves to LF at MLB level but has all star potential. Still another season on the farm before we see him. I list all the names because they are the players I expect to see. Not any pickups. 2023: LF:Alvarez/Meyers CF: Leon/Meyers RF: Tucker 2024: LF: Alvarez/Barber/Meyers CF: Leon/ Meyers RF: Tucker 2025: same.
Maldy is up to a 550 ops. With how bad he had been early in the year when I was wondering if he would have a sub 400 ops that’s not terrible. He’s no longer hitting worse than a normal pitcher. It’s becoming a little less of a problem.
I used to pitch when I was younger. I fully understand the pitchers, catcher relationship. I don't think Malady is a bad catcher as a backup, but he's not a regular catcher on a championship team. I felt the same way with another fan favorite Ausmus.
He has increased his ops each month so far, and with 7 HR he obviously still has enough pop to take one out if he gets ahold of it. His EV, barrel %, and LA numbers are all at or above his career averages. He may be losing a tick but there’s no reason to believe he has fallen off a cliff. He will continue to be the “really bad” hitter he has been his entire career and not the “unplayable” hitter some of us (myself included) thought he might be becoming.
Poorly worded by me. What I should have said is that he is not good at doing the things that the Astros, or I for that matter, value at the position. Sometimes I get carried away.
Yeah- that’s how I saw it earlier in this year. again- none of this **** matters during the regular season and all of this **** can be mitigated in the post season by carrying 3 catchers and pinch hitting aggressively when we are behind and chasing the game.
The 2018 Red Sox, and others, would like a word with you about your youthful pitching experience wrt catchers and championships.
