I think he’s actually lost consciousness one too many times… This recent story also came to mind for some reason… even though I never liked McLaughlin, I obviously despise Edmonds even more: https://awfulannouncing.com/local-networks/dan-mclaughlin-baffled-jim-edmonds.html
LOL. You know why Baker was brought in? To get this team focused and guide them thru the cheating scandal. He was probably the only current crop of managers for the job. With that adversity in that 60 game season and then turn them around in the playoffs, Dusty was genius. Didn't have Verlander and lost McCullers Jr, but got them to the World Series. Most on this board do not give Dusty credit at all. Is he perfect? No. However, the players play for him. Someone mentioned Hinch. Hinch is WEAK. His BS about being unable to stop the scheme told me all I needed to know about him. His managing in Arizona and now in Detroit tells you he is not a good manager with EXCEPTIONAL talent around him. Maddon? He had Trout and Ohtani and you lose 14 games in a row? WTF. 2000+ wins, 5 different teams won divisions with Baker as manager, 2 WS appearances in 2 different leagues. Not perfect, but many of you undersell Dusty's abilities.
He has WS as a player. You are right. It is hard to win a World Series. All those GREAT Braves teams with Bobby Cox as the manager, how many WS did they win? ONE. He managed the Braves for 20 years with Hall of Famers and only won ONE WS. Bet you would LOVE to have Bobby Cox as a manager? By the same logic, however, you have to be given the chance to manage 30 years and you only do that if you win games.
Whether Yordan lost conscious or not, hopefully he avoids DNPs. Maybe he got his wind knocked out Dusty is closer to good than bad. Hopefully a "hot" team doesn't beat Astros again who miraculously becomes "un-hot" for seasons afterwards and/or prior Yanks can't seem to lose a damn series. Beat them tomorrow and playoffs
He is what he is. Lovable off the field and a players manager. But a frustrating tactician with his line-ups and game decisions. But he's never managed a team without very talented players.
Having just dealt with the murky area between conscious and unconscious yet again with my sister having a severe blood sugar drop, I know it's not always an easy determination. It's like balls and strikes. Some are easy calls and many are not. I like the adjective cold as in out cold to describe the easy calls verses out on their feet. Err on the side of caution with collisions and concussion protocols. Being tough has it's place. But it's not always the best answer in the long term.
The Angels are a very poorly constructed team. Their woes need to be laid at the feet of their GM. Imagine the Angels with their money and the Astros's or A's front office? **** would get real.
Terrible example, It is well known Bobby Cox couldn't manage in the post-season. He would change everything he was doing for it. Only won one title because he encountered the only manager worse than him: Mike Hargrove. One minute Bobby Cox was leaving his starters in too long, the next he would pull them early. Had NO CLUE how to manage in the post season. Ask any Braves fan.
He set up the team before he left. I imagine they have tweaked a few things now that they are in charge, but they didn't start from scratch. Jim Crane has found a good balance between letting his Baseball Staff run the organization within parameters, yet being knowledgeable enough about baseball to go outside those parameters when recommended or he sees an opportunity. If I were still in the workforce, that's the kind of owner I would want to work for.
You know who has coached multiple MVPs in their prime (granted, one was steroid aided) at the same time and still didn't get into the playoffs? DUSTY BAKER
Many fans want to play WINDOW of OPPORTUNITY Management expecting the GM to go all in for ONE or TWO seasons of playoff ball. The Astros restructured to be a fixture in the playoffs as a strategy. This is why we don't sign $300M plus contracts but have no problem with short term High AAV contracts. It is also why there are always participants from the farm in almost every deadline deal.
