This year? I would be thrilled with next year!! Can you imagine the "stuff" a rotation of McCullers, Javier, Framber, H.Brown, and Whitley would have? All Whitley needs to do is keep doing what he's doing: baby step up ranks and throw strikes. then dominate the AFL again. Then he can compete for a #5 rotation spot next year. That would make this Astros fan very happy.
Probably not. But let a man dream after two outstanding outings - he is 37 after all, so it better happen soon. The point stands on LMJ and Brown.
OK, so let's define ACE. What 10 (let's say 10 for ease of use) factors go into creating the ACE metric? Somebody who really likes excel or databases is going to compile this, right? Listed in no order of importance (rank them 1-200, assign the same 1 through 200 for each, numeric value, add them up = voila! ACE). I understand some of these duplicate other ones, that's to unmuck some of the nerd-static: ER/9 WHIP HR/9 H/9 BB/9 K/9 FIP? WAR? FWopr? Pick your 10, show your work. I want the ACE spreadsheet on my desk by 5 on Wednesday.
Unless they end up in a tie, it has no relevance to seeding. And psychologically, unless dominance like Mike Scott, is usually less important than just being hot at the time.
Am I the only one who really doesn't like our players in the All Star game with the abbreviated break? I'm personally still mad at what they did to Atlanta last year, even though I don't necessarily like Atlanta.
Typically I just go with the guys who get cy young votes and figure if you were good enough to collect those your wn ace for the year.
What the trip in NY has confirmed for me is that if Bregman and Yuli hit at even close to their ability, we will put the fear of god into any team including the one that may break the single season win record.
At some point after the All Star break, I fully expect JV to experience a hick-up causing everyone to panic. If he goes on IR for two or three weeks, it may save him for the playoffs without disrupting his routine more than once. We'll have a softer schedule and more home games after the break plus a couple of series. The timing will be good for McCuller's return as well. ps Mid season for the Astros comes after the game on 7/6. A week from today. We play our last division game of the year on 9/18, which would probably be the earliest end to division play for any team playing a full schedule in history. It's a really weird year.
So let's say the Yankees and Astros have maybe a 5% chance of ending the regular season tied. And let's say Yordan is a 10 WAR player. Benching him, on average, will cost the Astros 1 win every 16 games. This is very fudgy math, but then playing him adds about a 7% chance to win the game (ignoring that Dubon actually did great, since didn't know that pre-game). The difference only is relevant if the two teams meet in the ALCS (maybe a 50% chance of that?). Multiply the three probabilities and you have a 0.15% chance of resting Yordan in the head-to-head game mattering. And that ignores the fact that maybe you have to give Yordan an off-day on a different day that reduces your chance of winning that game by 7%, etc.
Not to say I expect Whitley in the rotation this year, but I think he is just as likely as McCullers. Chances for either are very slim.
If it is possible and you are after a championship you must address it. Teams do not become champions by accident.
If you never rest your players, it's inevitable their performance will degrade and you risk the chance of injury which would prevent them from playing extended period of time.
I never really cared much about the all star game one way or the other, but that moved me from the don't care column to the pisses me off column.
True enough but day in and day out, not picking an appropriate time to rest your players is one of the things that separate Dusty from a good manager.
When is the appropriate day to rest him. I think it's the days he goes 0 for 4 and we throw a no hitter. F!!! Stupid Baker he should have know Javier was going to no hit the Yankees.
LMJ is throwing live BP. He could be back after the break. I suppose he could go to the pen full-time, but how likely is it that we make it through the season using only 6 starters?
