What's the case with Meyers? When do the Astros have to make the decision to call him back up or keep him in minors since his rehab assignment days are done?
Even a slightly regressed .730 OPS Meyers is a big improvement over Chaz and Siri. Real question will be how his arm holds up, I know the concerns Nook had about torn labrums and all.
I have erased every memory of this guy from my memory.... as far as I am concerned he never existed..
With a .730 OPS he is still a definite improvement over what we have, and that coupled with a bat at 1st or C, the offense should be good enough to compete for a WS. I am concerned about his arm for sure. He is overall a very good centerfielder with the glove.... he isn't Siri (who is possibly the best in baseball this year), but he is a definite improvement over Chas in centerfield.
Is that meaning a fresh start? I’m still pulling for Forest! But I’m not holding my breath he has the MLB fight in him.
Other way around, I want to say the talk around the org was that Forrest was a lost cause, and a Francis Martes tier bust thanks to not listening to coaches. Then again, if multiple lost seasons thanks to injuries, suspensions, and 'Rona, alongside the tens of millions of dollars he lost by making the majors at 24-25 instead of 20-21 won't humble a man, nothing will. I'm glad to see him still fighting, I'll never forget him eating AA alive at 19 and being part of that hype train.
It means I have zero expectations of him by this point. Between his suspension for drug use, his lack of consistent conditioning, his bizarre decision to change his delivery against the wishes of the Astros, his troubling interview last year...... and the obvious lack of enthusiasm by the Astros pitching coaches...... I have too many red flags. He could even come up late this year and pitch really well and I will have concerns about him having long term success in the same way I did about Trevor Bauer.... there is something off about Whitley when it comes to his maturity or how he mentally handles the game. There have been others like this before .... Eric Gagne, Jake Arrieta, R.A. Dickey and Denny McLaine come to mind.... actually so does Daryl Kile, but he figured it out.... Steve Carlton is another one.
DSL baseball may be some mashup of high school baseball and (not very good) JUCO baseball, but Sandy Gaston has been on fire for the Blue team. He's 3-3 so far today with an RBI double that turned into a little league home run thanks to an error. Gaston currently has a seven-game hitting streak and has recorded a hit in 10 of the 12 games he's played.
Best case scenario could be that he spends the next 5+ weeks steadily moving up, passing test and level after test and level. Then has enough value to be a big part of a trade at the deadline.
Complex-league roundup: FCL Blue got smacked 12-0 by the Marlins. They were 0-11 with runners in scoring position. FCL Orange beat the Cardinals 3-1 - Ricardo Balogh went 2-4 with a triple and scored a run. Kevin Holcomb allowed three hits and struck out six over three scoreless innings of relief. The DSL teams beat their counterparts from the Royals; the Blue team won 12-4 and the Orange team won 3-1. Rabel Colon has been pretty loud to start his pro career as he's hitting .326/.442/.651 with a homer and 9 RBI in 13 games with the Orange team. He went 2-4 with a triple, scored a run, and stole a base (5). 8 of his 14 hits have gone for extra bases (3 doubles, 4 triples). Carlos Mateo allowed three hits, walked one, and struck out seven over five scoreless innings.
I’m at the Hooks game and both teams have no hitters going thru 6. Amarillo has a perfecto going. Neither pitcher has even looked that good, although this Pfaadt kid is throwing mid 90s. Bravo was just mixing but his stuff looked pretty weak. Deason has thrown harder but he doesn’t look that great either. Pretty unimpressive. I wish Brewer was playing, that dude looks like an NFL QB.
I would say Jose Siri is his CF tonight but he couldn't fly home to Texas that quick. He may stay on the taxi squad anyway.
