While I would give Silas an “F” up to this point on his soft coaching, I agree that he deserves a chance with two top 3 picks and some decent talent next year. The one thing he and his coaching staff have done well is player development. As a coach, he needs to make his team better with free throw shooting, turnovers, and defense. He claims he now understands the importance of defense after the playoffs, but I question why he didn’t already get the importance of it with his twenty years of coaching experience.
Basic? Y'all weren't running anything half the damn games. Young teams need more structure (not less).
I like Silas the person and hope he turns into a good coach. But he hasn't shown enough yet, and if next season is a repeat of last season, he's got to go. The problems I see in no particular order: 1) No team discipline and unwilingness to crack down on guys who revolt or misbehave. John Lucas is the only person on the coaching staff that cracks down when guys are out of line. 2) Unwillingness to adjust in-game. Never sticks with the hot hand, mechanically sticks to his rotations no matter what. 3) Refusal to play younger players in a development year, even when you're the worst team in the league. Sticks to veterans irrationally. 4) Offense too often looks like a pickup game. Big men bringing the ball up, one-on-one iso ball. 5) Games where players look checked out. Getting blown out in the first quarter and showing no fight to close the gap for three quarters and just going through the motions. 6) Misusing players. Going weeks with Jalen Green sitting in the corner as a spot up shooter and not getting the ball. Letting KPJ and C Wood take turns doing iso with no ball movement. Going two bigs for weeks when it's not working.
Need to bring this defense back to Rockets. But it starts with bringing in the right players that can switch 1-5.
He definitely should not be on the hot seat going into the season. But if he can't fix is defense problems then I would start looking next season for someone that can. Next season use some cap space to sign a good player but still have enough cap space room for a max and then the following season swing for the fences for a player like Morant.
2014, McHale... CF: "He doesn't have a system! They're all just running around doing whatever they want!" 2016, Bickerstaff... CF: "He doesn't have a system! They're all just running around doing whatever they want!" 2019, D'Antoni... CF: "He doesn't have a system! They're all just running around doing whatever they want!" 2022, Silas... CF: "He doesn't have a system! They're all just running around doing whatever they want!" ClutchFans, consistency is thy middle name.
Meanwhile Silas rolled out Theis/Wood/Gordon as starters lol. Gtfo Silas. Sorry for the quote just seeing this and it annoys me how incompetent he is and that we are stuck with him unfortunately through his contract because of cheap ownership. “grown as a coach”. Lol
Wow. Silas got thrown out of one game lol. Maybe that was the o e he left for being dehydrated. Can’t remember but I still don’t see many Xs and Os. incompetence is expected from tilly though. He doesn’t want to pay two coaches at once.
We got one crazy MF as a coach…..least tecnicals this year of any coach in the NBA. Thrown out of one meaningless game out of the 164 games he’s coached in Houston and never in the 20 years before it…..guess all that soft talk, crying at post game interview sessions, lack of discipline, 2 guys refusing to play in second half of a game, etc. is just a facade. It’s always the quiet nice guys next store who are the killers. Great to see Tilman has a good read on his coach and team.
