The list was weighted by 3 factors: availability, fit, and cost. The Rockies are a terribly run organization and have avoided trading players when they should, so it’s hard to know that Cron will for sure be available even though on the surface he should obviously be shopped heavily. Also, even tho he’s a good hitter he isn’t necessarily a perfect fit for the Astros especially with Yuli looking more capable in the last couple weeks.
Is this who you think they should target or who you think they’d be likely to target? Give me Nelson Cruz if he’s basically free (I doubt the Astros have any interest but with YA being a capable LF there’s room for him to DH some on the list. I like 2 and 3 the best. Make both of those happen and I’m very happy. Good list.
The more I look the more I like Bryan Reynolds as a player and as a fit. He would not be cheap but would fit and he is a hell of a young controllable ballplayer who would improve this team. Is mostly hitting 2nd for the Pirates but can hit leadoff and allow Altuve to move back to the #2 or #3 spots where he is a better fit and ( according to reports) he is more comfortable. I like Reynolds ( B) Altuve (R) Alvarez(L) Tucker(L) Bregman (R) Pena(R) Brantley(L) Gurriel(R) Maldonado (R) Pittsburgh has been in a rebuild for years and finally could be looking to compete within the next couple of years. They also have many holes in the roster. Therefore a package of closer to MLB ready players may be more acceptable than 1 or 2 higher ranked but further away prospects. I would offer Jose Urquidy, Chas McCormick, Yanier Diaz, Jonathan Bermudez, and Emmanuel Valdez. According to bsseballtradevalues.com this trade is completely one sided in the Astros favor but that is basically because Diaz, Bermudez, and Valdez have basically no value. I can't imagine that is true.
I would add Jorge Lopez from the Orioles. Throws a 99 MPH turbo sinker and lefties are only hitting .125 with a .510 OPS against him. He crushes righties even more. Still under control for 2 more seasons after this year so wouldn't be cheap but probably more obtainable than Bednar. I also wonder if there is a deal to be made with the Blue Jays. They are stacked at catcher with Moreno, Kirk, and Jansen. Moreno has started hot and is supposed to be the future stud. They also lost Ryu to elbow surgery for the season. Maybe a trade could happen for Jansen.
We went to a Cubs game a few weeks ago and Wisdom had a great game. I follow baseball fairly closely but I had never heard of him.
he is ok he does swing alot. i think they would shy away from him for that reason alone but who knows? Robertson and Happ would be likely better targets on that front
I read that Meyers might have significantly reduced power for several months due to the labrum injury. He may not be the same player until next season if so, it might be a good idea to just keep him in AAA the rest of the season. If so then a guy like Reynolds becomes even more important. Until now I was thinking 1B was biggest hole but if Meyers isn't himself CF becomes huge priority.
Would love Reynolds But fair or not, if Pitt put him on the market that offer would get outbid by quite a bit If we want Reynolds then Brown and Leon would have to be the starting point of an offer
If Meters is out till next year I would be trotting out Leon every day. He has Siri's defense with a better arm and McCullers bat with better projection. I would like to see him with some experience in the Fall.
Based on his AAA numbers, Leon would project to strike out ~40% of the time in MLB. He does not have “McCullers” (I am sure you meant McCormick) bat. He is still an extremely high ceiling player but he needs to show he can get his k rate down while maintaining his power before we talk about him jumping over McCormick, Siri, and Meyers as the everyday CF.
Astros get: CF Bryan Reynolds Pirates get: OF/IF Pedro Leon 2B Enmanuel Valdez RHP Bryan Abreu RHP Peter Solomon I would definitely give up Leon as the centerpiece for a hypothetical Reynolds trade. Not willing to part with Brown, so this is my best attempt at a deal without Brown. I may be overvaluing some of our players, so feel free to criticize.
That is nowhere near enough. I don’t see any way Pittsburgh trades Reynolds to Houston without getting Brown back. If they do it would be because they are getting Javier instead. Solomon’s value is down. We all love Valdez but it’s hard to know if other teams value him like an elite prospect. Brown, Leon, McCormick, and Solomon is in range imho.
The starting pitching situation for the Astros is weird because they have tremendous depth but few real war daddies to leverage in the post-season. Who is the best starting pitcher for the Astros? Verlander has been fine but he's been more like late stage Detroit JV than resurgent Astros JV. Framber has probably played the best this season but we all know he can be unpredictable at times.
I don’t know about that. Verlander has been the 18th most valuable pitcher in baseball and Valdez 26th. Both guys have pitched more than good enough to be considered viable playoff starters. Javier and Garcia have also been very good. This staff was never going to be on par with the 2019 staff but is more than adequate if everybody stays healthy. And there really aren’t any elite SP that look to be available.
I still think there are players that can be had with what we are trotting out . URQUIDY does have value no matter what is said its not extremely high but its high enough. He still has years of control. If you keep Odorizzi till McCullers gets back then that is the same situation. Odorizzi has a chance to build value back up. Hunter Brown wouldn't go any where. Sorry.
