Shawn Dubin struck out eight in four innings for Sugar Land last night. Forrest Whitley is not having a great 2022 debut with the FCL Blue team... he just gave up three runs in the 1st. Down in the Dominican, Axell De Paula has a couple of RBI singles for the DSL Blue team.
Averaging 96 on his fb while throwing strikes is great. Get him to AAA asap so he can get the hype train going again.
It should be very clear what role suits him best. He clearly has the swing and miss stuff, and if he develops into a good high leverage arm, that is great. They need to commit to him being a full-time reliever.
Could not agree more !! This is about throwing pitches and leaving the mound healthy. Nothing else matters. We can start looking at results and improvement after a few more outings.
Nerio Rodriguez and Zach Daniels were placed on the Asheville IL today. Especially tough break for Daniels, who was really starting to turn the corner in recent weeks.
Luke Berryhill hit his 8th HR tonight. Rather large group of AA hitters who are on track to see AAA time in July/August which will determine how risky they’ll be in the rule 5 draft. Berryhill, Diaz, Abreu, Adolph, and Dirden all have ops >850 in Corpus and all but Dirden will be rule 5 eligible this offseason. And given Houston might have an opening in LF and C next year it might make sense for the Astros to challenge those guys a bit more this season. As middling as Houston’s farm is, I am very optimistic about how their upper levels line up with their pending free agent position players: Free agent: potential replacements C Jason Castro: Korey Lee, Luke Berryhill, Yainer Diaz 1B Yuli Gurriel: JJ Matijevic, Taylor Jones, David Hensley IF Aledmys Diaz: Pedro Leon, Enmanuel Valdez, David Hensley LF/DH Michael Brantley: Pedro Leon, Enmanuel Valdez, JJ Matijevic, Taylor Jones, Corey Julks, Lewis Brinson, Dillon Thomas, Justin Dirden, Wilyer Abreu, Ross Adolph, Yainer Diaz Korey Lee is the only player on that list who doesn’t have an 800+ ops in AA or AAA this year. That list also highlights areas of depth Houston might trade from.
For NOW, this is enough. But at some point we need to find out what his new potential is. We can't keep basing it on 2015 scouting ratings. He's only 24 and still has time. But his career is already ~5 years behind schedule.
The two FCL Astros squads will be playing each other for the first time momentarily. Meanwhile, the two DSL teams are getting hit hard by the Guardians' two DSL teams.
Prospects haven't had very good performance lately. Yanier Diaz may be the best in CC, and I didn't look at the bottom of the prospect histories.
Most disappointing thing in the minors has been Lee. They need to protect Diaz or trade for a catcher. I know they won’t do it, but Contreras is looking better and better to me.
