You are literally not doing that. Bregman had a nagging hamstring injury in 2020, a quad injury in 21, and wrist injury that required surgery immediately after last season ended. Why are Bregman's injuries "less severe". Also the fact that you consider Rendon clearly the better player, when in fact they basically provided the exact same value from 16-20. If you asked me if I though Rendon "could" be better this season, it's possible, no reason to be confident either way. The fact that Rendon is still owed roughly 180 million through his mid 30's, while Bregman is owed less than 70 makes what is a coin flip (at best) a pretty damn easy call.
I was watching the Angels game last night. The announcers for the Angels said Rendon has a nagging wrist injury that he will be dealing with all season, and if he isn't better today they might put him back on the injured list. So no thanks to the Rendon idea.....
According to baseball reference Bregman has averaged 6.1WAR and Rendon 5.0WAR per 162 games for their career. They are currently hitting about the same this year Both have dealt with various injuries the past few years. Rendon is 4 years older. Rendon is much more expensive Rendon has a contract commitment 2 years longer. There is not a single positive in the Rendon column. Why are we having this conversation? Because Rendon is from Houston?
I don't know why this was thought to be a good idea... Hopefully Rendon being hurt will end the discussion.
We’re stuck with Bregman. Period. Let’s just hope that he figures it out. The first couple weeks of the season- he looked like he was back. I’m not sure if there is some nagging injury or some kind of mental/psychological issue- but mechanically his swing is off. He just isn’t barreling up balls for whatever reason- and when he does… they go right to a defender. I’ve seen small glimpses of him being close to breaking out- but then he has a game the next day where he makes weak contact every at bat. I will say this though- I have a lot more confidence in Bregman moving forward than I do in Rendon especially when you factor in age, money, and years left on contract.
still don't quite understand how people don't realize that meyers is more than likely the same caliber player as the guys we currently are rotating in center. he's a nobody. low level prospect who went on a hot streak in the minors and is somehow is being penciled in as the future, while yet to show he is any sort of impact player. and on top of that, somehow is benefitting from a 9-month and counting injury by having his seat kept warm while avoiding ever having to prove himself. look i hope he's good, buy theres a zero percent chance i stand pat at the trade deadline because he's "waiting in the wings". that's completely stupid.
Meyers clearly changed dramatically as a prospect during the pandemic. He was a defensive-first mid-round draft pick whose ceiling looked like a 4th outfielder prior to 2020. Then there came a steady stream of notes from the quarantine site (Corpus) about how Meyers was destroying baseballs. But there was no minor league season so he didn’t have a chance to showcase his development and generate the kind of prospect hype that comes with it. Then came 2021, where he dominated AAA (.340/.400/.600) and continued to hit well after getting promoted (111 wRC+), all the while still showing he is an elite defensive CF. Now, his injury does muddy the waters because labrum’s can certainly cause long term problems especially in players whose arms are a big part of their defensive value. But aside from that, there’s every reason for this front office to reserve a spot for Meyers, who over the last 2 years has made this front office very high on him. And after what we’ve seen from Pena, I think it’s worth giving Click the benefit of the doubt when it comes to inserting young players into the everyday lineup. At this point it would make a ton more sense to seek an upgrade at 1B or C rather than CF. But as always the market will determine where the real value is.
still don't quite understand how people don't realize that Pena is more than likely the same caliber player as the guys we currently have at SS. he's a nobody. low level prospect who went on a hot streak in the minors and is somehow is being penciled in as the future, while yet to show he is any sort of impact player. and on top of that, somehow is benefitting from a 4-month and counting injury by having his seat kept warm while avoiding ever having to prove himself. look i hope he's good, buy theres a zero percent chance i stand pat this offseason because he's "waiting in the wings". that's completely stupid.
you think it makes a ton more sense to roll the dice with meyers, a virtual nobody with no mlb track record, coming off a 9-month and counting injury of a torn labrum, in efforts to win a world series, and to instead upgrade yuli gurriel, the reigning batting champion and gold glove winning 1st baseman, because he's slumped for 2 months? poor yuli shouldve just broken a bone till after the trade deadline passed! also, these are all luhnow's players. click shouldn't really get any benefit of the doubt on anything. and pena has literally nothing to do with meyers. hard for me to argue with anybody using jeremy pena as a reason that meyers is good. may as well replace kyle tucker with emmanuel valdez if that's the case. but even if by that ridiculous correlation, correa is still way better than pena, as would an established good mlb outfielder be compared to meyers. odds that jake meyers moves the needle and increases our chances of winning the world series this year are infinitesimally low
i guess i missed what other ss's we have on the roster and what injury he had that's kept him off the field and that he showed he could perform at mlb level and he's had a real evaluation period where they had time to see him play before committing to him for a postseason run. cute try though. if pena was batting .220 or lower right now and sucking, there's a 100% chance he'd be who everybody was talking about upgrading at the deadline.
So ignoring everything else, what center fielder are you bringing in that marks a clear upgrade over Meyers?
move the goalposts further why dont you. pretend meyers doesn't exist, and whatever mlb players you consider a clear upgrade over siri, chaz, and dubon, those are fine by me as well. and if you're willing to move tucker to cf some, you can add those as well.
You can not leave Leon out of the center field equation yet. He could wind up as a super utility man but for now Leon in center field > Meyers or McCormick in center field > Siri in center field. If I was forced to choose today I would play, Leon at 3rd base Meyers & McCormick as tandem center fielders, 4th outfielders. Siri pinch hitter/runner. Bregman at 1st base Brantley at DH. Alvarez in LF, mix and match as needed.
What goalposts have I moved? The reason Yuli has been mentioned is because there are clear proven targets, there are no such options in CF. We could just move Brantley to RF and say f**k defense. I'm not exactly sure why we should pretend Meyers doesn't exist, he does, in fact I've seen him in person with my own eyes. Haven't seen him this year though, so i might need to make a trip down to Sugarland to verify his continued existence.
Not to mention Bergman’s always been a better second half guy, and his advanced stats are still good Rendon is an injury machine at this point and if we have to play Diaz over there for long stretches he is too Horrible trade idea but thankfully it has less than 0.01% of ever happening
There are none and that's the other part of this situation. I completely agree with the Meyers to Pena comparison. They were both defense first low-non prospects until they worked with the organization and committed themselves during the pandemic and now the organization thinks they could be MLB regulars. So why is Pena suddenly proven and beyond talk of replacing but Meyers isn't? They both have done very well in about 1/3 of a season. Pena 2.4 fWAR in 54g and 211PA Meyers 1.2 fWAR in 49g and 163PA ( 4 fWAR pace for 550 PA) according to fangraphs a 4 WAR is equivalent to a 65 scouting grade, or all star level position player. So based on: The benefit of the doubt the organization has earned due to performance of previous prospects The good ( though limited) performance thus far and potential for improvement. The lack and cost of outside options. I like sticking with Meyers ( and Pena)
