Shows how wrong I was talking about Gonzalez being overmatched in High A and needing to be demoted. He’s dominating this month. Kudos to the Astros development staff. good to see Luis Guerrero pop off 2 HR tonight too.
I am not one for giving up on prospects but it is time to cut ties with Jason Schroeder. It has to demoralize the team whenever he takes the mound. Tonight was just another loss by him but it felt like the end.
I predicted Grae Kessinger would break out this month and so far that has not happened. I am not sure what is going on, but cursory research makes me think he’s still suffering from bad luck. He has very good k/bb numbers (15.1%bb, 23.3%k). He has cranked 5 HR and stolen 13 bases, so he’s shown a good amount of power and speed. And that would normally result in at least average babip, but his is awful at .192. His underlying numbers along with his defensive value and scouting pedigree would put him projecting to a solid MLB future as a good utility guy or fringe everyday infielder, but obviously his paltry 60 wRC+ in AA doesn’t paint the same picture. For now I am still optimistic and expect his numbers to rally and for him to be in line for a spot in AAA to start next season and in the discussion for needing rule 5 protection.
Comparing Kessinger to a guy like Enmanuel Valdez for instance. Kessinger hits 53% fly balls while Valdez hits 36% fly balls. Half of Valdez's are infield pop ups while 60% of Kessingers are. Valdez hit a homer on 25% of fly balls while Kessinger does on 7%. Seems to me he hits too many pop ups for one thing and secondly isn't powerful enough to drive the ball out of the park consistently on his other fly balls. Is he really going to get more powerful at nearly 25? Kessinger hits 17% line drives while Valdez is at 29%. I don't have a lot of faith in Kessinger getting much turned around. Seems like maybe a Tim Bogar ceiling if his defense is stellar.
That IF popup difference doesn’t seem that stark. Seems like he could potentially adjust his swing to lower his launch angle which would reduce his popups and increase his line drives, which should raise his babip (without too much of a slg reduction)?
Thomas is a Houston native... the Rockies picked him in the 4th round out of Westbury Christian back in 2011.
Odd move, especially with Meyers on a rehab assignment. I guess he gives them a LH option at CF to potentially pair with whoever left if they consider moving Meyers, Siri, or McCormick at the deadline. They may end up putting him on waivers themselves whenever Meyers is activated. I guess the Lewis Brinson experiment isn't panning out.
Brinson's performing as expected (.261/.329/.516, 10 HR) so this really is a bit of an odd move. He was out all last week, however, and the McCormick/Siri tandem has been acceptable enough, so there's really no path to Houston for him unless someone gets hurt. And even then they'll just play Dubón, so I bet Brinson gets traded for some complex-league lottery ticket.
I wouldn't read anything into it. Didn't they have an open roster spot once JJMatawhatsit got called up?
Was lookin over stats today and Corona is one of a few players who have demonstrated at least above average power and speed this season. (The others being Brewer, Matijevic, Leon, Abreu, Hamilton, Cerny, Daniels, and Carrasco). A good showing in Asheville will have him solidly in Org Top 30 conversations. I am actually surprised Corona is getting moved up ahead of Cerny.
