I’ll be interested to see if Brown could be included in a deal for a big bat/arm at the deadline. There’s no clear path for him this season and even next season the path is still semi-unclear. I want to hold onto him because homegrown arms are so valuable, but for the right player I think it could be worth it to move him at the deadline.
Not just no but HELL NO!!! Good pitching is hard to find and this kid has a bright future ahead of him.
Being blocked should never, ever be given as a reason for trading a pitcher. There is always a path for them if you think they will be really good.
I think we’ll get a really good picture of Brown’s value by whether he’s traded. If they trade Javier or Urquidy while holding on to Brown I think that would be a signal they think he can be a legit ToR SP.
Unless something's happened, we still have a can't miss, sure fire TOR ACE. He's just had some bad luck, bad choices, bad circumstances, bad etc. Forest Whitley is now rehabbing his career in AAA.
People keep pipe dreaming on Trout, but if the Angels really do fall completely out of it by next month, is it possible they’d listen on Ohtani? He is a free agent after next season. Would they take Hunter Brown, Cristian Javier, Jose Urquidy, Pedro Leon, and Jose Siri? The more I think about it the more I know Click is solely focused on enhancing the PLAYOFF roster. Winning the division is extremely likely, so any moves are going to be geared toward playoff matchups. Which makes me think the focus will be on either superstar position players (which there are unlikely to be any available) or pitching. And there don’t seem to be any Verlander types available; Montas or Castillo are good pitchers but in the playoffs they only represent a moderate upgrade over somebody like Garcia. So I think the move will be to add a reliever who complements the guys they already have, which likely means a lefty.
For years, Luhnow refused to trade Whitley ( or Tucker) when team after team, after team asked for him in trade talks. He made it to AAA 3 years ago and still has not made his MLB debut. I love Brown and hope they keep him but WE as fans always over value prospects. Until he pitches well in Houston and earns a regular spit he is just another Whitley. As a fan I want another World Series win ( or serious run at one) with player X on the team more than just Hunter Brown on the team
Why woe won't divest ourselves of Pitching without something great in return. Verlander may not be back McCullers may not get back to what he was. Any of Valdez, Urquidy, Garcia or Javier could hi a wall or get injured. Odorizzi could be early season Odorizzi. Montero is a FA
The problem with the Astros system of 1 level 60 prospect, 2 level 50 prospects, and a bunch of level 45 prospects is A 65 level prospects is MUCH MUCH MORE than a 60 A 60 is MUCH MUCH MORE than a 55 Etc. If we offer a 60 , a 50, and 5 45 prospects Then a team who offers 1 65 and 1 55 probably just outbid us. The Astros don't have the talent to get a guy who is top 5-10 player in MLB
First it was Soto and now Trout and Ohtani.... uh huh Trout makes 37 million a year and has 8.5 years left. That makes it an automatic no under Crane's contract rules not to mention the Astros being in the same division as the Angels and on the bottom of the list of teams they would want to trade Trout to. Ohtani brings fans to the stadium even if they are losing. He's the hottest thing in baseball and is a constant flow of positive press. No way they trade him either. If the Angels lose 10-1 but Ohtani hits a HR the HR is the top story on mlb.com
The team may simply roll will the current roster and then look to fill holes on the offseason. 1) the team has learned in 2019 and 2021 that just getting there gives you a chance and the better more talented team doesn't necessarily win it. 2) This team has great chemistry and the players who could come in and fit in while also being an improvement are very limited. 3) The team has not really made any splash moves at the deadline since Click took over. 4) at all the positions that could be improved the team either has players they currently believe in or have a track record of success that makes it doubly hard to decide to move on.
The way you counteract that is filling in with an already high performing major leaguer, which is even more valuable than a 65. Someone like Cristian Javier or Luis Garcia, for instance.
I’m not saying I would do it or think they will do it, just think it could make for an interesting trade.
Garver has a significant injury and may not even catch the rest of this season. I am not sure Stallings is a big enough upgrade to justify a move.
No, if we are going to take Maldonado away from the pitchers who prefer him, it would have to be for a much much bigger offensive upgrade
I doubt he's available but I would give up Leon, Ivey, and another prospect for Salvador Perez. He's face of their franchise but 32 and having a down year... We can use him over Maldonado moving Machete to backup role without losing much defensively. If Brantley goes in the offseason; rather than Leon stepping in we can use Yordan in left more and Perez can DH more with Lee getting a call up at catcher... If our primary DH is also a catcher it gives us more opportunity to rest catchers effectively allowing us to carry 3...
Perez signed an extension last season. Doubt they move him especially when they are trying to win the next couple years after bringing up Witt. Also, considering how they refused to trade Merrifield for years after extending him I don't see them moving the face of their franchise. Also, can we stop with trades that include Solomon or Ivey as a main piece? Those guys have been AWFUL this season. Ivey is 26 years old with an ERA of 7.71. He's more likely to be cut than have any trade value. He cleared waivers when he was removed from the 40 man roster. Any team could have had him for free. Even paired with Leon he's not getting you one of the best catchers in the game that is under contract for 3.5 years plus an option.
Salvador Perez signed a 4 year 82 million extension last year, so he'll be making more than 20 mil a year.
Recency Bias FTW!!! Perez has played 27 games at C, 17 at DH. His splits are ridiculously favoring him at DH. Long story short, he's not an everyday catcher, and when he's playing catcher, he's basically the exact same hitter as Maldy. And he makes $20M a year. Other than that, it's a great plan, Walter.
