Astros should be able to get 3-4 prospects who will slot in their org top 10 plus another 2-3 who will fit in the back half of their top 30. Their top pick should be their 3rd or 4th best prospect right away. Based on the early returns from their farm this year (outside of Pena and Brown) they need to have a good draft.
Baseball America's latest mock has the Astros taking Oklahoma State RHP Justin Campbell. Perfect Game's first mock has them taking Mississippi State RHP Landon Sims.
That would be a really risky pick. All the mlb.com mocks I have seen have Houston taking college position players. I am hoping Jordan Beck or Zack Neto are available.
They say anything about Paul Skenes from Air Force? He's pitching against Hansen and the Horns in game 1 of the Regional this afternoon, all I know about him is he's good, huge, and throws hard
Basically only what you already know. From their Regional Preview: Paul Skenes, RHP. Skenes, a sophomore, was named co-Mountain West pitcher of the year after going 10-2, 2.42 with 92 strikeouts in 81.2 innings. He’s also a two-way player and hit .326/.426/.652 with 12 home runs. Skenes last summer played for USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team and has serious prospect upside on the mound thanks to his powerful arm.
Yeah, he's a superfreak athlete. Thought he might be draft eligible this year because of 2020 Covid stuff, but he's a true sophomore. Game's at 1PM on the Longhorn Network if anyone's interested. Also, UT 1B Ivan Melendez was named National POY, he had an absolutely ridiculous season. Should be a fun game. eta: Melendez leads the country with 29 homers, a .903 slugging percentage and 196 total bases. He became Texas Baseball's home run king with his 29th blast of the season, surpassing Kyle Russell's 28 homers in 2007 for the program record. He ranks second nationally with 87 RBI, fourth with a .522 on-base percentage and eighth with a .406 batting average. He became the fourth Longhorn to be named the Big 12 Player of the Year and the first since Kody Clemens in 2018. Melendez, also a unanimous First Team All-Big 12 selection, now has 42 career home runs, which is the third-most in a career at Texas. Melendez becomes the fourth Longhorn to win the Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Year, following Brooks Kieschnick (1993), Scott Bryant (1989) and Greg Swindell (1986). Melendez was also named a first team All-American and is joined by left-handed pitcher Pete Hansen and outfielder Murphy Stehly landed second team All-America honors. Hansen is 10-1 this season with a 3.01 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 92 2/3 innings pitched. He has only walked 16 batters and held opponents to a .208 batting average against. Stehly is batting .377 with 21 doubles, 17 homers and 54 RBI. His 92 hits this season rank seventh nationally, while his 166 total bases are the 13th most in the country.
Back in my day ... The MLB draft and the College World Series happened at the same time ... Back in my day.
Melendez can't run all that well.... but he can flat our RAKE. If he is there is round 3/4, I think you take him. I know we have Yordan but IDK at that point in the draft.
Hell, I would not be opposed to popping Melendez with that compensation pick (after rd 2) and trying to get him under slot.
Will he release his full medicals before the draft? That might be the only way he gets back into the first round.
