It seems to me that Trump's narcissism has been the secret sauce for his success. That's been the key to doing all the ill-advised evil stuff that Trumpers fall in love with. If DeSantis knows intellectually to throw out the read meat for the base, but he doesn't have that mental illness within him to make him disregard caution, good advice, moral revulsion, and every other guardrail humans usually benefit from -- I think the Trumpers will sense he's not the real deal and not embrace him. The next time DeSantis may get political benefit by ordering law enforcement to shoot protesters in the legs, will he have the balls to do it? Or is he going to fear consequences like rejection, moral reproach, electoral disaffection, impeachment, indictment, or revenge? Trump was sometimes stymied by organizational reluctance to do evil, but he never feared consequences. I think DeSantis might be too mentally fit for this approach. He only pushes his advantage when there's good reason to think he'll win. I fear instead Tucker Carlson, who seems to have the requisite narcissism to pull this strategy off.
