He think he is going lottery. He measured better than Grant Williams who was a late 1st rounder I think. And he tested better so far athletically than Williams did... I mean Liddell's standing vert is 9" higher. Lane agility and shuttle solid. Ultimately it looks like he could literally guard 1-5 in spurts. No concerns about his mentality, sound defensively. He just doesn't have great length but again with Grant Williams showing I think this archetype is demand.
How many Giannis were there before he was drafted? How many Dirks were there before he was drafted? How many Magic Johnsons were there before he was drafted? These questions are asinine.
I know you are a big Chet fan so stuff is going through some colored lens, but pls read again. I was saying Chet as a weak side shot blocker was the perfect fit next to Sengun, not Paolo.
How can you right a profile and not talk about his non dribbling or the fact that he is bad at the rim? For as much as Banchero's 3pt shooting percentage is brought up, how about this guy's at the rim percentage? This is why I take these "exsperts" opinions with a grain of salt, they become enamored with "potential" just like Joe fan.
I’ve been on the Jabari train for a while and because of his reported weakness off the dribble, I’m starting to think he is going to drop to us at three. He will be a better fit for us, but I am starting to think Banchero will be a better offensive player long term. I’ve come around to being happy with any of the three.
@D-rock @cmoak1982? This is what I have been saying all along, although I don't agree with calling him a C. I think this particular guy is picking and choosing what he wnts to high lite as strengths and weaknesses because he just ignored all of Smith's weaknesses, but he did give examples of Holmgren not being a great defender in space which is a question I have had. Would he be hunted and be a liability come playoffs?
There’s a bit of a contradiction, it literally says he performed well in isolations. Missed bunnies aren’t solely on the offensive player, the defensive presence alone causes misses. Rushed shots and trying to get the ball up quicker to avoid the block. Did he get cooked sometimes? Absolutely. Literally every DPOY gets cooked. It’s the ability to continue to make plays after is what makes him and his ilk elite. Edit* Paolo will be hunted in the playoffs far more than Chet. I can pretty much guarantee that.
I have been asking the same question since forever and nobody can answer it, I don't know if he has all that in his bag but what I do know is that if he does, he is too passive and not that guy who is going to be the alpha on a team. I will say that he showed a little step-up when they were losing to Arkansas, but even then he was only shooting more jumpers. These Dirk comparisons are crazy because at that size he will never be able to work in the high post like Dirk, he would be easily dislodged.
I don't buy into the notion that, come playoff time, teams are going to hunt Chet down on PnRs/switches thereby making him a liability. That's only possible if the kid has zero offensive game like a Gobert or Steven Adams, guys who can anchor defenses but can't do anything outside of 3 feet from the rim on the offensive end. Holmgren is capable of putting in 20-23 points a night and that would keep him on the floor. Other teams could counter with small ball but then you got a legit 7 footer that could either eat the PJ Tuckers of the small ball world in the paint or pull the Giannis/Adebayo small ball centers of the world away from the paint for your teammates to operate.
He led Duke to the Final Four much farther than what Chet did. It's amazing how you can pick and choose what is a thing and what's not. Nobody is knocking him for being a team player we are questioning if has it in him to be the alpha or beta of a contender at least with the other guys we have seen them be the focal point. Says who? He is the only guy who has shown he can do it at the same competition level everyone has been at. This.
Paolo is about to have 2-4 teammates selected in the first round. He didn’t lead that team or carry that team to anything. No one except Chet’s detractors (really only a few) question his tenacity and alpha mentality. There’s far more proof of him taking over when needed than not, specifically in US team plan and international play. He was the best player on the floor against some of the best in the world.
And for the “says who” I do, and many others do. He isn’t a 3 level scorer, he isn’t the facilitator that you claim he is. There isn’t a single team in the league where he will be the lead dog or go to facilitator. Secondary? Sure. But right now he’s not a good enough shooter or defender to not have the ball in his hands.
No he did not literally say he perfgormed well in isolations, this is what he said. Lastly, the defensive tape is perhaps not quite as awesome as the stats might make you believe, particularly in switch situations. The Synergy stats say he performed well against isolations, but several of those plays featured missed bunnies at the rim, and the sample is small enough that it matters. Holmgren typically gave up a driving lane to one side and then relied on his length to contest at the summit, but often didn’t get there in time. Yes Poalo will be hunted but we know he can get it back on the offensive end and the same guy said this about Banchero. Defensively, Banchero’s lack of length gives him issues contesting shots and protecting the rim, which might limit his utility as a small-ball five. Otherwise, I thought his tape was pretty good. His clips in isolation defense show a guy who is comfortable sliding his feet out on the perimeter, and he didn’t default to giving yards of space and allowing easy pull-up 3s the way some bigs do. In his best moments, he could play close enough to remove any pull-ups at all, like this: So do you want a guy who is a clear step above offensively and a least an average defender or shotblocker who is average to good at shooting 3's?
It literally says the stats show he performs great in isolation. He cherry picked some plays where he got cooked, that is the exception, not the rule. 39% is elite from 3. Not good and definitely not average. He’s also not only a good shot blocker, he is an elite overall defender. Just because you want to detract from him to claim he’s only a shot blocker doesn’t make it true. Also, Paolo isn’t a clear step above offensively. He’s super inefficient, a decent passer and has a good handle for his size.
So now he is not a 3 level scorer? You get caught up in your feelings and just start saying crazy stuff, He could be the lead dog on the Magic that's why people are mocking him to them and nobody says he will be the go-to facilitator, stop using that strawman. Anyway I see you are getting worked up and can't have a civil discussion about these guys, so I will stop trying with you.
