In fairness, the wiser course for him would have done all of this quietly - do the homework first, and then announce the offer publicly - for this and a few other reasons.

perhaps, but it really does sound like there's a chance that twitter misrepresented itself in SEC filings, which Musk mentions in one of his tweets posted earlier

    That's possible, but it's a serious accusation.

It would be impossible for Twitter to publicly prove that less than 5% of its accounts are spam, and Musk must know this. First and foremost, it would violate their privacy policy of their users as to prove it, they'd have to show who is a real person and thus tie an account to personally identifiable information. That's the only way to "prove" an account is "real." That would violate their privacy clause so they can't do that.

The fact that he is asking for proof that needs to be made public, does raise suspicious he is just trying to back out by making a demand he knows can not be met. It could be a tactic to lower the price, but it also could be he needs to pull out because Tesla's stock has declined in value and thus the amount he was putting up no longer covers the loan.

So I don't know what is going on or what's in his head, but this demand is eyebrow raising from him.

why would this have to be done publicly? i.e., why would that information have to be revealed publicly? I'm not sure I understand

Twitter's estimates are purportedly based on a combination of public and private user data. What exactly is Musk proposing they do to convince him that their estimates are fair and accurate? Perhaps he can start with how he arrived at the 20% figure.

It's reported in multiple outlets as, "Musk took to Twitter early Tuesday to say his deal to buy the company can’t “move forward” unless the company shows public proof that fewer than 5% of the accounts on the social media platform are fake or spam."

    https://www.business-standard.com/a...itter-deal-says-elon-musk-122051700705_1.html

Maybe there is confusion on this point - that's possible. But I'd imagine that given how Musk is doing all of this publicly - ironically on Twitter - it could very well be the case.

I don't know why he wants all of it be made public and transparent.

I may have misunderstood your initial statement then. There is nothing about showing "public proof" that a percentage of accounts are real or fake that would require publicly revealing identifiable individuals' private account information

    https://nypost.com/2022/05/17/half-of-joe-bidens-twitter-followers-are-fake-audit-reveals/

At least half of President Biden’s 22.2 million Twitter followers are bogus, a new audit revealed.

The audit, which was done for the social media giant by software firm SparkToro, found that 49.3% of the president’s followers are “fake followers”.

SparkToro has defined “fake followers” as “accounts that are unreachable and will not see the account’s tweets (either because they’re spam, bots, propaganda, etc. or because they’re no longer active on Twitter).”

SparkToro used the same audit on Musk himself and found that nearly 70.2% of Musk’s 93.3 million Twitter followers were fake.

LOL. I like how they snuck in that last sentence at the very end.

It's not surprising that the follower count would be inflated for politicians. I'm curious what percentage of that is categorized as "fake" due to inactivity on Twitter. 70.2% for Musk does seem exceptionally high.

Facebook is probably sweating a bit with all this.."prove everyone is real" talk..
Didn't facebook recently say they have over 2 billion active monthly users......no one's going to double check that?
