I'm sure that's what they went on, but

no other book of spells worked that way in the universe thus far. It was you learn the words or the hand movements, then you can do the thing, independent from the book. Same goes with the witchcraft runes, you read the book, learn how to make the runes, then you have the power to use them from that point on.

However, like I said, I can see the direction they took with it so I just went with it because I wanted to enjoy the movie.

One thing I really didn't like though was that

they played it up as if the "Doctor Estrano" who started the movie did something wrong. The only thing he did wrong was not just outright killing the girl and saving the multiverse. Him going the slow route of trying to take her power allowed the demon to have a chance to hill him. He should have just instantly killed her, so that her power could not be exploited to destroy the multiverse.....then again, if he had done that, we wouldn't have a movie.....but it was the right thing to do.

Fair. I still argue it would have been the right thing to do.

Well in the first Dr Strange movie
he was constantly reading from spell books, including the Book of Cagliostro where he learned the spells required to use the Eye of Agamotto. He didn't need to possess the book to continue using the spells. Even before that, it showed him constantly reading books of spells among other things. In the Dr Strange lore, he can be basically one of the most powerful beings ever.....he just has to know the right spells to do it.

Possessing items of power, like the Eye of Agamotto or the Cloak of Levitation are cool, but the real power comes from the super powerful spells hidden in books like the Darkhold or the Book of Vishanti.

For example, if this version of Dr Strange knew the Crystals of Cyndriarr spell, he could have potentially killed just about anyone instantly.

With a Dr Strange vs Scarlet Witch matchup, it's like Batman vs Superman. If they have to fight head up with no prep time, it's over in a heartbeat Superman/Scarlet Witch instantly murder Batman/Doctor Strange, but if Batman/Doctor Strange get enough prep time (and find the right spell) they can pretty much beat anyone.

That cameo by the living tribunal was pretty good. I tried to pick up as many details as possible when i watched it but it flashed so fast

It was good, not great. I’m not really disappointed per se, just really liked this marvel's Dr Strange character and thought this movie was just a little convoluted.

The Illuminati was initially interesting but fell flat after getting trucked by Scarlet Witch.

    B- for me.

Everything Everywhere at Once was an A+ multiverse movie for me.

You really cannot avoid spoilers for this one so I feel like now that I know what happens I don’t need to rush to see this and can wait for it to come on D+ later this summer unless you guys can convince me it’s theatre demanding spectacle.

I dunno but to me the premise just never really excited me much. I don’t really care about alternate realities. I want the reality I’m invested in to have a payoff. I feel like the franchise going in this direction of everything being about “the multiverse” just really takes the wind out of the sails of any stakes. It was good fun for No Way Home because Spider Man is just good fun and it worked for that one movie.

I think Marvel could benefit by pulling back a bit into a tighter universe and storyline with the next slate. Two things I want to see them scrap is the “Secret Wars” adaptation I think they are going for and the stupid Skrolls crap with Nick Fury. The whole “are they actually a secret skroll” ploy is going to be a cheap trick. The franchise could benefit from getting back to a more grounded character arch of a core few human characters that are played by great actors.

    Multiverse isn’t going away.

Multiverse is the best and most efficient way for Marvel to bring the Fox properties into the MCU without rebooting them all, something that I think would only be moderately successful. So there’s no way they’re turning back. It’s also all laid out for them in the comics so it’s an easy sell and creation process. Lastly, the Russos want to do the Secret Wars arc, and they’re the best directors of MCU movies, hands down.

However, the MCU is so huge now that not every show and movie has to be about the multiverse (Moon Knight), much like the comics. There should be enough for the casual viewer to enjoy.

Multiverse also allows for more creative storytelling, and brings in Kang (established) and Galactus (possible) as villains.

MCU has to up its game. Can't really go back to a regular human with superhuman abilities and a dude in an metal suit leading a bunch of people against a purple alien with some shiny rocks...else it'd be a retread.

Now you have a dude with 10 magical rings, a sorcerer, a witch, a Norse God, etc. If the heroes are super superheroes, the villains would have to be, as well. The stakes have to be raised, and there's no higher stakes than X number of worlds in danger.
