"There is a person knocking on the door. Can you check what they want?" -- no one cares. But "Linda is knocking on the door. Can you check what they want?" is a big problem.

Your definition of "big problem" is different than mine.

Regardless, the notion of applying gender to pronouns is often arbitrary and fluid. So if you have a big problem, with that second sentence, it's because
    a) you are a grammar Nazi (which is a losing battle because language is in a constant state of flux)
    b) you feel it's required to project your worldview onto others

Linguists don't enforce "norms" but instead study language differences, dialects, and changes over time, which is inevitable.

There are objective measures and characteristics you can’t change, the idea that I should call you 6’3” and 200lbs when you could be 5’2” and 300lbs is not accurate. Feelings don’t come into play here

Clarence Thomas is transracial, so yes black people can get the benefit of being white.

I may not have been clear. I was agreeing with the point you were making (as I understood it). Many people have a "big problem" with the second sentence, while they are perfectly fine with the first one. So the real issue isn't singular vs plural meaning of "they"/"them", but rather the idea that a person's gender can only be truly known by them and no one else.

    Those things are not equal.

Nobody disagrees what 6'3" and 200lbs looks like.

There are endless exceptions to "race" that are not even worth getting into.
And the Olympic committee can't even agree what "gender" means using teams of scientists and doctors. Currently, being a woman "depends" on what event you are competing in.

So yea, race and gender is not an "objective measure", as you put it.

Yep. One can make an assumption, and probably be correct most of the time. But it might be helpful to acknowledge that you are, in fact, making an assumption.

What Makes An Athlete Female? Here’s How The Olympics Decide (forbes.com)

    Excerpt:
"World Athletics ruled that women who were assigned female at birth but had naturally high testosterone also needed to meet the five nanomoles per liter testosterone requirement in order to compete with women in the 400, 800, and one-mile women's races."

So if you test high in testosterone in the 100m, that's fine ...just not in the 400m.

So yea, not even in track and field can they apply a consistent standard of what defines as "female". This is "naturally occurring testosterone", btw.

So if scientists can't even agree what is a woman, what makes YOU so sure you know? (When I say you, I mean generically)

??? The Bible never uses "thy." It wasn't written in English-- Old, Middle, or Modern. The King James translation of the Bible uses "thy." Look in the NIV or ESV and see if you can find a "thy" anywhere in there.

On topic, don't care if anyone wants to be transgender or transracial or whatever. If they want me to call them 'they', I'll give an effort (though honestly I'll probably be pretty lazy about it, knowing me). I guess the ask I've really not been willing to accommodate is to provide my own pronouns, unsolicited. I see people with Zoom handles with their names followed by "(he/him)". I've been in meetings where the leader has asked people to introduce themselves, share their preferred pronouns, and what they do. I appreciate they're trying to create an atmosphere in which trans and gender fluid people can feel comfortable because they aren't some exception. Maybe I'm showing my age, maybe its the ancient trauma of being misgendered as a girl when I was a skinny long-haired 15 year old, but I think it's asking too much of me. That's how trans people feel every day, my children would retort. Yeah, I get it, it sucks, and I'll be as nice as I can, but people are just going to have to take a guess at my gender.

(Though honestly of all the places that could use gender indicators, this bbs might be one. Being a basketball site, the default assumption seems to be that everyone is male, unless you know specifically otherwise. Also, the assumption seems to be that everyone is white and I know that's not true.)

Good point. There is a "gender" setting in one's profile (Male/Female/Unspecified), but I never set that and I don't think anyone pays attention to it?

I'll try out the pronouns for a while under my name. Knowing some folks on here, it will probably increase the chances that I would be misgendered as a joke. I don't think I would care, but if I had to live my life constantly be misgendered I can imagine having a hard time with that.

Btw, on a tangent. When you get a Texas driver's license, they ask your race and they allow you to pick only one category and there is no Other/Mixed category. If you're Blasian, for example, you'll have to pick whether you're Black or Asian and deny the rest of your identity. I wrote my state legislators about it, actually, and one staffer responded saying they'd try to address in the next session. But nothing happened on it. It puts my children in a weird position of being non-credibly transracial on their official ID cards.
