not really. advanced metrics don't tell the entire story. relying solely on that would be terrible. oh and marcus is definitely worthy of dpoy. In no way is he a undeserving candidate
That makes 2 active players that have come out in defense of jalen green to spite bill simmons. Something tells me the players in the next cba are gonna angle to get the season ending awards out of the medias hands and into the players or front offices hands. They can use 2 players recently in Tatum and Donovan Mitchell who were robbed of a supermax
Just like media members are misinformed and have biases when voting for awards, politicians are misinformed and bias when making laws.
1 guard can't impact a season defensively the same way 1 big guy can, just not possible. It's just an example of an egregious one that happened because of narrative, where metrics could have prevented it
So apparently Smart's defense can't impact a team the same way Gobert's can. What a terrible take. Everyone literally just saw what a liability Gobert is on defense. No wonder you seem offended. You have a simmons mindset. Smart definitely has the respect of the league, which was shown when he won. Then you have someone random online talking about he's unworthy. Boy does this sound familiar
Simmons is a Boston fan, of course he did. doesn't matter if its the playoffs or not. He's always a liability on the perimeter no matter what time of season it is. We've seen that for years. it's just highlighted more in the postseason because they're sitting at home now and he gets exposed every other night
The issue is that is basically impossible for any one person to be a perfect arbiter for these awards. It is not like the NFL where someone can watch every game. There are 1230 games in a season with 1 hour of condense game film for every game over 173 days. They would have to dedicate about 7 hours every day without off days to watching basketball tape. That is without any other job responsibilities. No one is going to get paid to do that. And as soon as you start to split the task to different people or say use a sample of games, people get angry and say that it is not fair/biased.
Embiid is a crafty MF I have to say; he was able to take a direct shot at BS through referencing Jalen Green, when he actually has direct gripes with Simmons for voting Jokic above him for MVP, and for justifying leaving him off the all-NBA first team on a positional technicality so he could put Jayson Tatum on. Are Simmons points valid, and is he logistically consistent? Probably, or at least defensible! And he's stating his position out in public, and letting everyone know his thought process. That's a heck of a lot better than the hundreds of other writers who make their votes anonymously. I love JG, but there's no way he deserved a 2nd place vote for ROY this year. Guys at the top are just wired different from normal human beings. They are not going to hear the context, or the complements; they're going to only hear the insult, and use it to feed their internal drive. JG should be thankful he's got the bulletin board material now from BS; now it's up to him to prove that he's deserving of the defense of his peers.
doesnt matter if simmons is right or wrong.. nba players got mad over the term "owner", they will fight in the next cba to strip the media of their voting priveldges
voting should be a mix of coaches, FO execs, and current players…can also include media, but media consisting only of former players and coaches that work at ESPN, TNT, NBA TV, and local stations the media has way too much power and control
I think the biggest thing that people overlook when they suggest improvements to this system is how many people simply don't care about MVP and have no interest putting any effort into it. That's the problem with letting the players vote, so many of them just do not give a **** at all. We saw this with the all star player vote. And back when the players did vote for MVP, there were some problems back then as well. At least with writers and media members there's a level of transparency and accountability in terms of bias, effort, or whatever else - these people can actually lose their votes, and they often do. Coaches and front office guys is a much better solution than letting the players vote IMO. When it comes to Bill Simmons, I have a bigger issue with his anti Houston bias than I do with any kind of argument regarding his basketball knowledge/expertise/whatever. He puts more thought and effort into his voting than 95% of these voters, and I think he does a fine job. I personally think Jokic was the right pick for MVP this year, so obviously I don't have an issue with that pick. But he very clearly does have a problem with Houston, and anyone out of Houston. I'm sure loads of these voters have similar biases that we just don't know about because they don't record themselves talking about basketball for like 15 hours a week.
when he gets isolated in space, he damn sure is a complete liability. I mean if years of proof doesn't show that, then not sure what else to tell you
Simmons definitely needs to be more careful with his words, but I also think that if we left it solely up to players and coaches to decide, it would be a huge mistake. Analysts get to watch the game from an outsider's perspective, and they probably get to see a lot more basketball games from more teams over the course of a year than an individual player or coach will. Simmons can be an arrogant jerk sometimes. OK, most of the time. But the guy knows and loves the NBA. His "Book of Basketball" is one of my favorite nonfiction books of all-time, and I still pick up and randomly read sections of it from time to time. If we took away award voting rights from everyone who said something stupid when they shouldn't have, no one would have voting rights for awards. I get that everyone's pissed at Simmons, and the man has notoriously crapped on the Rockets the last decade, so I get it. But let's not let that homer perspective cloud our judgment on the issue.
You are looking at the end result and not utilizing root cause analysis. He single handedly makes them a top 10 defense - he really spends most of this time on the court surrounded by guys who are mostly minus defenders in space. That's why he gets 'exposed' every playoffs because smart teams play small ball and force him to choose between guarding a 3pt shooter or defending the rim. If he defends the shooter, the Jazz opponents get a ton of points in the paint, if he shuts the paint down, their opponents get wide open 3s. It's not a Gobert problem - it's a jazz personnel problem because Rudy is tasked with shutting down his man AND the other four Jazz player's men too. Utah's problem is because Gobert is so good, they have prioritized acquiring better offense over defense and they got too many one dimensional players as a result and the guys they thought would be plus defenders have regressed (Conley is getting old and slowing down and Danuel House is still a knucklehead). Go watch Jordan Clarkson and Bogdanovich play and tell me how many starting guards and SFs they can actually guard in the league - not too many!
