Musk says he’d reverse Trump’s Twitter ban

Elon Musk said Tuesday that he will reverse former President Trump’s ban from Twitter if his acquisition of the platform is completed.

“I think it was a morally bad decision to be clear and foolish in the extreme,” said Musk, the CEO of Tesla, while speaking at the Financial Times’s “Future of the Car” event.

“I do think it was not correct to ban Donald Trump. I think that was a mistake,” he added. “It alienated a large part of the country and did not ultimately result in Donald Trump not having a voice.”

Trump having a massive cult following does not make him any more deserving to be on Twitter. If Musk wants to rescind the ban on Trump, he should be willing to rescind in-place bans for any other users that violated Twitter's TOS as a general principle.

Elon Musk’s Belated Disclosure of Twitter Stake Triggers Regulators’ Probes, by the SEC as well as the FTC

SEC is investigating Tesla CEO for tardy notification after buying 5% of Twitter’s stock; FTC has separate probe under way of purchase reporting

Mr. Musk likely saved more than $143 million by not reporting that his trades had crossed the 5% threshold, said Daniel Taylor,
a University of Pennsylvania accounting professor, since the share price could have been higher had the market known of the billionaire’s growing stake.

Separately, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is investigating whether Mr. Musk violated a law that requires companies and people to report certain large transactions to antitrust-enforcement agencies, according to
a person familiar with the matter. After making the filing, an investor generally waits at least 30 days—giving the government time to review the purchase for whether it hurts competition—before buying more shares.

Activist investors are subject to the antitrust filing requirements if their purchases of a company’s shares exceed a threshold—generally $92 million—and their existing assets are greater than $20 million.
Passive investors who hold less than 10% of a company’s shares and don’t plan to be involved in governance or steer basic business decisions are exempt from the requirement.

If the FTC alleges violations of the law, it can seek fines of up to $43,792 a day. The FTC investigation was earlier reported by the website The Information.

"If there are tweets that are wrong and bad those should be either deleted or made invisible and a temporary suspension is appropriate, but not a permanent ban."

"Banning Trump from Twitter didn't end Trump's voice. It will amplify it among the Right, and that is why it is morally wrong and flat out stupid."

Musk isn't exactly saying what many of his fans on the Right seem to think he is saying.

I think the right is going to turn on Musk once they realize he isn't going to do everything they want.

    Fair enough.

What do you think the right expects out of Musk and what do you think Musk is going to do?

Dont forget Trumps claim to fame is simply being a libtard hater.

I think the right expects Elon to turn Twitter into a free-for-all no holds bar kinda deal. I think they see Musk as sympathetic to their causes especially with some of his posts about how the left is pushing him to the right.

But....he's a businessman at the end of the day. And unlike Fox or Sinclair and other media states that cater to the right, Twitter is a diverse platform that requires big spend brands for its revenues. Even with switching to charging users, that wont' make up for the ad revenue. Musk is a businessman, and out to promote his own image and success. At the end of the day, while he finds the left annoying and a thorn in his side for the pressure they have put on him (regarding Tesla and regulations), he sees the right as merely a means to an end for himself. And he is there not to serve the rights interests, but his own. And that is twofold - his own greatness, and by making a profit on Twitter (which serves his own greatness as well). In other words, he's going to do what's best for himself and Twitter, and that is likely to conflict with what the far right expects now.

I remember a few years ago a Trump supporting relative giving me a hard time about buying Tesla stock. To him Musk was another big liberal idealist. Good thing I didn't listen to him.

The Right's embrace of Musk is a matter of convenience and the perception that is he is "owning the libs". I don't think Musk himself is aligned with Left or Right but overall his interests are more to the Left of the political spectrum.

If temporary suspensions are OK, does the length of the suspension increase depending on the severity of the violation or repeat violations? How is that determined? Is there a cap for how long a suspension will ever be?
