Sometimes I will just be walking down the street and I start singing, "I'm going hungry." "I'm going hungryeeeeeee."

    Now you just showing off.
I went through a big Neo Soul period, Musiq and D"Angelo where in the rotation along with Raphael Saadiq.

Really liked a lot of Miguel never really heard anything Frank Ocean that moved me and never heard of Tom Krell.

I am intrigued by Anderson Paak and need to do a deep dive.

Another favorite underrated album and group.

    Lucy Pearl.

Yea, I forgot to mention Raphael Saadiq (who originally got his start with Tony! Toni! Tone!) but he is another good one. Never got into Anderson Paak but I will tell you someone that you should listen to in addition to How to Dress Well is SZA - that girl is legit! EDIT - BJ the Chicago Kid is another one that seems to be on all these other artists' stuff whether they are soul, rap, hip hop, etc.

So even though I think this is a great thread, there are always problems with music threads: when you say "underrated", do you mean in your opinion to to everything else you own or is it "underrated" in terms of critical opinion or "underrated" when it comes to amount of sales? Most of the albums I picked, I tried to go with ones that weren't darlings of the critics but I know there were a couple that I had. But some of the picks, I wouldn't say are really underrated - just good albums.

Definitely underrated in The U.S. but totally recognized in Europe..well not at the time but now it’s considered great by critics.

Are you going to see OMD Next week?

As I always say, there is nothing that is objectively good or bad when it comes to art (it is entirely subjective, the best song is your favorite song). I tried to give an explanation of what I meant in the OP when I said, "What are some great albums/CDs/whatever they are called when an artist/band releases a collection of songs that you think don't get enough accolades/play today?" So, the only criteria is something you like that you think should be more played or well regarded right now. Totally non-technical, just what do you like that isn't the current radio/critical darling.

Good point. Not that they're under rated historically, but I believe todays young'uns lack appreciation of how ****ing amazing and game changing the Beatles were in their day and remain today.

I figured that is what you meant but like Breakfast in America...that album isn't underrated, it's the best known album by Supertramp! Now, if you mentioned "Crisis? What Crisis?", that would be a different story.

If you love it and the kids aren't listening to it, then it is underrated (by my definition). Not enough people love Jack and Diane or The Black Parade, even though they were hits at the time. Ultimately, I want someone to listen to something posted here and say, "Damn, that song/artist/album that I have never heard is great. Let me now go on a new music journey." Figuratively of course, they don't have to say it out loud. Second to that, if someone thinks, "Hells yeah, that album/song off that album slaps!" that would also be good (as I did with Hunger Strike).

The Beatles are not my jam, but that is exactly the vibe I am talking about. Like if you search on YouTube something along the lines of "rap fan reacts for the first time" you will see people that grew up listening to stuff like Tupac or WuTang and have no idea what came out in the 50s, 60s, 70's, or 80's in any genre.

True, and the same could be said about other LP’s that were influential and might seem obviously so when looking back today, but at the time they came out you heard a cut on the radio and rushed to a record shop to see if they had it. A few examples. Some are debut albums and some, like Revolver, marked strong departures from previous music by the artist or group.

Highway 61 Revisited, Bob Dylan (1965)
The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators (1966)
Face to Face, The Kinks (1966)
Pet Sounds, The Beach Boys (1966)
The Velvet Underground and Nico, The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967)
    Small Faces, Small Faces (1967)
Are You Experienced, Jimi Hendrix Experience (1967)
    The Doors, The Doors (1967)
Safe As Milk, Captain Beefheart (1967)
    Surrealistic Pillow, Jefferson Airplane (1967)

I thought about this thread this morning and although he is the world’s biggest dbag, the “808’s and Heartbreak” by Kanye West has turned out to not be a bad album. It is still one of his weakest albums but it paved the way for electropop with him doing more singing than rapping. Yeezus which is not only my favorite album by him but one of my favorite albums of all-time makes a lot more sense once you have listened to 808s and Heartbreak.

I have not listened to this album it's one of my biggest blindspots, The only ones I have listened to in their entirety are the College albums.

Yeezus needs to be included in the list.

I almost included Yeezus on my list of 60+ and probably should as when it first came out, many of the critics hated it. However, over time, I think the critical re-appraisal of that album has turned out to be good.

Back in 2013, I worked on a construction job as an expediter for shipping and receiving and there was a pipefitter named Eddie Vetter and me and another guy used to always walk up to him and sing, “I’m going hungryyyyyyyy!” Oh man would he get pissed at us…good times, good times.
