Polk deputies arrested Seth Settle of Lake Wales on Thursday for second degree murder, tampering with evidence and giving false information, according to a press release from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Grady Judd held a press conference regarding the charges Friday morning. First responders took the victim to a local hospital around 9:41 a.m. Thursday morning. They labeled her injuries suspicious and contacted law enforcement, according to the press release. Investigators visited the crime scene, where Settle and the victim lived. He told them he was in his bedroom when the victim told him to “stop smoking in the house.” He said he pointed a firearm at the door, and the gun went off. When he found the victim unresponsive, he called an ambulance and left the scene. “The suspect is trying to play this off as an accident, but he had a loaded gun and intentionally pointed it at the door where the victim just exited, and he fired it,” said Judd. “He fled the scene without rendering aid, then he arranged for a friend to dispose of the weapon. These are not the actions of a man who just accidentally killed someone. Officials said Settle lied on five separate occasions about getting rid of the firearm. A friend of Settle’s contacted the sheriff’s office and said he had two guns Settle gave to him. Deputies later recovered the weapons.
