I think that is why I like Banchero so much, he shouldered a lot and got better being the guy on that team under the extra pressure of it being Coach K's last year, it's that intangible that I like. I think he needs a strong alpha with him because he is a bit passive but he can step up in crunch time. I don't think any of these guys are franchise leaders, maybe Ivey so it's not a big negative to me,
Jaden Hardy at #5 just blew my mind. Take this ranking with grain of salt but I would love Banchero to become consensus #1.
Nice comp. Webber was a better athlete and ball handler and Banchero is a better shooter but who knows what Webber would be as a shooter in today's basketball. I think Coleman is the better comp he also would be incredible in today's NBA.
Gonzaga plays great team ball and prepares their players fundamentally better than most programs. For the most part guys who come out of that school are fine professionals. Duke prepares superstars. Its just the way it is. At the end of the day its just playing ball though. Great players will command their place on the court. For a guy like Chet who's being proffered as this fiery, tough nosed and competitive guy he was fine waiting for the ball. How many times do you see Paolo waving like a madman on his sets? Ive seen too many plays where Gonzaga is stalled out and looking for someone to step up and Chet is okay camping out at the 3 point line waiting for someone to find him. I mentioned it earlier where does Timme fall in the draft? 2nd rounder? Undrafted? And Drew Timme is a dang GAMER - he gets up for big matchups and highly touted players - I like him as a player, but he may have benefited from coming out last year after his great run, it is what it is. Paolo had upperclassmen on his roster too in the front court and the back court and he still needed to drive that train because even with other 5 star guys Paolo was the best of the bunch to execute that offense. It wasnt his fault Duke stalled out - everyone around him just seemed to forget how to shoot when games were on the line. Paolo had to go god mode in a few games at the end just to keep dancing.
The best passing big man in this draft is ... Trevion Williams 6'10 270 Trevion Williams could be the best passer overall in this draft, including all the guards and wings.
My wet dream would be to nab one of the big guys with the first pick and then wrangle our way into the top 10 and get Keegan. He would be an awesome NBA wing 3. Not an Eason or Sochan on defense, but not far behind either.
Chris Webber came into draft averaging 19/10 and over 1 steal and over 2 blocks. Webber was not just better athlete, better defender, better rebounder but he was also the better scorer. And he was surrounded by - the Fab 5. But Paolo was better passer - Webber averaged same number of assists as Chet, 2.5.
That's from a different age, If Webber was playing today he would be a monster. Webber was not a great defender but yes Banchero is not on Webber's level IMO.
Webber averaged more than a steal and 2.5 blocks coming out of college. That's damm good defense for a 4. If Banchero put up those defensive numbers I'd be team Banchero all day long.
How can anyone watch this video of Boozer and say he is anything like that video of Banchero vs Gonzaga? In the Gonzaga video alone, Banchero creating for himself off the dribble, grabbing a rebound and running the break himself, walk up 3pter, drive from 3pt line, another rebounds and running the break leading to him throwing an alley oop to teammate, another trailing 3pter, runs the pnr as the ball hander and breaks down the d for a dunk, runs the pnr as ball handler and steps back for midrange. Meanwhile, in the Boozer video it is almost exclusively just finishing down low like your prototypical 1990s bruiser PF. I'm convinced you have to be blind to make the comparison. The only thing remotely similar between the two is skin tone.
Passing wizard from anywhere on court but amazing in low post. More advanced offensively including playmaking and paint scoring than Sengun. But Sengun is the better defender (more committed) and has more likelihood to be at least average from 3P unlike Williams.
I have not really dived into any scouting reports because its been early but these are great. A very fair read of Banchero, the thing that stood out to me is his footwork, its beautiful kind of Scolaesq. The thing that's absent from his game is the explosion and the IDGAF mentality, I think his lack of emotions also sways people opinions, would like to see him in a better offense with spacing and movement. He is going to be killer in the pick and roll. I know I am going to get killed for this but he looks like a more refined Sengun, if he had Senguns IDGAF attitude he would be all world. He has a very high BBIQ but he thinks too much sometimes and is a bit robotic.
I think I've asked you for this before, but do you have a source for the wingspan? All I've ever seen "officially" is 6'9" or 6'10".
I'm talking in the NBA and you know steals and blocks are not very good defensive metrics, Drummond led the NBA in blocks and has never been a good defender.
Drummond would have been a better player and more appreciated if he played in 90's and 00's. But blocks, steals, deflections, altered shots, paint defense figure into DRTG. It's the very reason why Gobert is always top 3 in DPOY votes every season. Drummond and even Gobert just cannot defend on perimeter in this era of switch defense and guard friendly rules.
Respect the passing ability but Williams has an uphill battle in today's NBA. Centers who can't switch, can't protect the rim, and can't shoot are not highly valued at all. Even a monster like Sabonis is a little hard to build around because of those weaknesses and he puts up Pau Gasol numbers (minus the blocks). Sengun has those same weaknesses which is why we're so desperate to draft defensive frontcourt help this year.
I agree and that is why Banchero as 4/5 concerns me. Poor switcher, not very good protecting rim (especially at 6'10 255) and below average 3ball.
TW actually played PF in college. Just like Banchero. And get this, Williams shot almost 36% from 3P last season - .357 to be exact. Better than Banchero who shot .338 from 3P. Both Paolo and Trevion averaged 7 TRB and at least 3 AST. Paolo was better scorer and averaged 15 PPG vs Trevion's 12 PPG. But Trevion accomplished his numbers with only 20 MPG while Paolo put up his numbers by playing over 30 MPG.
