OK — so from this, it sounds like “shorting” could be more damaging because it’s perceived as a signal that the stock price will go down, which could then in turn drive the price down. Does “holding a short position” mean Gates has already sold the shares, or that he’s planning to do so?

you aren’t misunderstanding… maybe Musk got more info than this that he’s not sharing but shorting by itself doesn’t mean crap

It’s just an investment. Maybe it was a good one. Maybe a bad one, depending on the timing. Whatever the result, it’s an investment. Making it more than that without more info is nothing more than guesses.

imagine if Elon reveals all of the censorship/shadow-banning/throttling algorithms Twitter has been using to manipulate content

Short is betting that the price will go down. It’s extremely risky because, in theory, the stock price can go up forever. Your loss can be infinite. Anyone that short better have a way to cover it else they are betting everything. Someone like Gate probably isn’t doing this himself but has someone doing the investment for him- I can’t imagine that huge of a short without some option to cover in case it becomes a bad bet.

Just to add - It is quite often used to hedge your long investment. If you want to maintain long investments but feel that the market is overvalued or a recession is coming, you might want to have some shorts- it’s an advanced technique that a typical investor should not get into without understanding the risk.

All of this is just to say - it’s an investment. Don’t get caught up in trying to find meaning in it.

I see a lot of hopes and dreams Elon will "change twitter".

Maybe more "right and free", maybe more "left and free". I'd be more concerned if Elon's friend Peter Thiel took it over, since I'm guessing Thiel wouldn't mind burning a billion or two in market cap to push his agendas.

Elon just wants to be a hero and a champion for his cause. He doesn't win that by rocking the boat too much since many libs still believe in his companies for a better tomorrow (Telsa, Solar City, SpaceX, etc)

I guess fake libertarians hope Elon will do more to advance their goals, but I wouldn't bet on it. He'll mostly use his pulpit to enhance his bottom line, which in theory advances his own personal dreams.

In any case, I didn't complain much when Bezos bought Wapo at a discount rate. That **** has the same conflicts of interests and 1st amendment concerns (as Murdoch).

Billionaires gotta billionaire...cuz the plebs liek et.

This. But no one is going to like him by the end of this. Every one that ever has an issue with Twitter will now blame Elon, not the twitter shadow rulers or Jack, it'll be Elon now. All Elon.

But billionaires have this thing of wanting to be remembered just like everyone does and he'd probably like to go down as someone that wasn't just rich.

I do agree and have been saying not much will change. Social platforms have these rules for a reason and opening the floodgates to the trolls and edgelords would sink Twitter, it'd be irrelevant in a year.
