That is a really good way to summarize what I dislike about the show. Would have been better as movies. One thing I hate about the serialized format is how grand things have to be. It's always about saving the universe from some grand threat whereas old trek had episodes where Data was just trying to solve a mystery in the holodeck or something small that would further develop the characters.

They have just now started to give the pilot more scenes and whatnot and flesh out the cast but the format of the show simply doesn't allow for it and then yeah the one character that does get fleshed out is the trans character. What is funny to me is Trek has a great opportunity to tackle this issue with Trills since Trills still have the memories of their previous hosts it would make sense that some trills might be in a male body and feel more feminine or vice versa but that's not exactly what they did there....the whole Adira thing was just shoved in there and didn't really feel necessary which is ashame, it was a blown opportunity for legit trans and non-binary representation but even I as a very progressive person roll my eyes at how that was done.

Picard is a mess. The first season was interesting at times and it was great to see all these old characters again but...once the nostalgia wears out...I'll be honest I haven't watched the 2nd season. I tried watching the first episode and fell asleep during it...I'm sure I'll get around to it.

The whole thing with Trek is that now it's just beign pimped as content for a streaming service and that's it. I'm not saying the writers don't care, I'm sure they do, I'm sure they are even talented, you don't get this far not having any talent usually...but I don't know if this project is the right fit for them and if they have the right vision. Trek would be in great hands if the hired Seth McFarlane and give him like a Kevin Feige role for the franchise, Orville was on point.

I've seen very little of Discovery or Picard and don't have Paramount Plus. What I've seen of those am not much of a fan not because they are "Woke" but because the writing and look isn't good. Discovery has retconned the Klingons and not in a good way. They look awful and they've redone several aspects of Klingon culture that don't make sense from prior Klingon culture.

There is nothing wrong with woke messages as long they are handled well. The Expanse is actually very woke. It tackles questions of racism, such as between the Belters and Inners, class and economic exploitation. Also in the world of the Expanse not only is homosexuality completely accepted but so is polygamy. When Drummer talks about her family on her ship that is literally her family and not just a group of close mutual dependent friends. It is people she is polyamorous in every sense of the word.

The Expanse works because the writers understand that it's not just about cramming down social messages but about crafting a good and complex story. The point isn't to say "Hey look at how great it is that Drummer is bisexual and polyamorous" but how does that actually advance the story.

Also while the conflict between the poor and exploited Belters versus the Inners isn't played out simplisticly as poor exploited people are good but is very much driven by the moral ambiguities.

This is a spoiler but it's been out long enough I'm not going to use the tag.
In the first season what drives much of it is the search for Naomi Mao. She is the prototypical "Woke" person. A rich girl who one day realizes that much of her lifestyle has been built upon the exploitation of others. So she goes off and joins the rebels trying to overthrow the imperialistic capitalistic system. She finds out quickly that doesn't mean there isn't exploitation on the other side.

The Republicans are not scared of AOC. They wish everyone on the left was like AOC, because they would win every National election. She is their boogie man.

It's hilarious how @tinman loves the Expanse(we've had nice convos about the show in the past) and rails on "wokeism" while the Expanse is one of the most "woke" shows in existence as it does deep dives into class disparity, race, ethnicty, warfare based on class and ethnic lines etc.

I see the irony in that.

But I also get what @tinman and @Os Trigonum are so passionate about. While I think it's a bit overboard, and they are only presenting the side of the left being overly politically correct against the right - there is a problem where people take things way too far as a means to feel power over others.

Making someone lose their job not because they are awful people but because they said something you disagree with and want to punish them has become the norm - not just by "woke" people but also by the right - we see that from Trump and Desantis all the way to people trying to get teachers fired for introducing pronouns.

    It's reached a toxic point.

If this Star Trek show gets cancelled it’s because nobody watches it or likes it

it’s not like it’s going to go on forever like the walking dead

The Republican establishment are definitely worried about Stacey Abrams. She's pretty much has superstar status at this point like Obama had before he got elected. The thing is that she has actually proven she can get stuff done and mobilize voters. I wish she would run for President and I assume she will by 2028. One term as governor of Georgia could launch her.

Maybe Paramount Plus should poll their 10-20 viewers if they are democrats or republicans or illegal immigrants or people who stole accounts to stream the Halo show that sucks
if they like these new Star Trek shows

because you know, the FIRST THING people want out of STAR TREK is cameo appearances of politicians
