Nic Cage plays 'Nick Cage' in first look at comedy-thriller The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

In the comedy-thriller The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (out April 22) Nicolas Cage plays "Nick Cage." So what exactly does that mean?

"['Nick Cage'] is an invented version of Nic Cage," says the Oscar winner, 58. "The character is feeling unfulfilled and contending with the rejection that can happen so often in the small town that is Hollywood. It's not me. I'm feeling pretty good about things."

The film's Nick Cage accepts a million dollars to attend the birthday party of a crime boss and Cage superfan named Javi (Pedro Pascal). "Javi has a wax statue of Nick and you think, 'Oh, it might be awkward between a film star and a fan,'" says Cage. "But they're both cinephiles, so they're having wonderful conversations about The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Paddington 2."

The cast also includes Neil Patrick Harris playing Cage's agent; Sharon Horgan and newcomer Lily Sheen as the actor's ex-wife and daughter, respectively; and Tiffany Haddish as a CIA agent. "Tiffany factors into the story once Nic has gotten to Mallorca, where the birthday party takes place," explains director and co-writer Tom Gormican. "She ropes Nick into a CIA operation and the plot [proceeds] from there."

As he did in 2002's Adaptation, the real Cage pulls double duty, playing both "Nick" and "Nicky," a younger, Wild at Heart-era version of the actor and figment of his imagination. "He's got the lanky long hair; he's just constantly riding Nick about his career choices," says Cage. "I wasn't too excited about the idea of playing myself, but when Tom sent me this script, Nicky reminded me a little of Jerry Lewis' Buddy Love in The Nutty Professor. I always admired what he did with that movie. For me, Nicky steals the show."

Saw this last night with the wife, we both really enjoyed it. Nic Cage and Pedro Pascal are pretty hilarious together, their bromance makes the whole thing work.

Not as crazy as I would have liked but still fun to see Nic poke fun at himself and his career.

I saw that Nic Cage movie Pig a couple weeks ago and that was maybe the best I've ever seen Nic Cage act. The man is so much better than most of the crap movies he agrees to be in. I wish he didn't have so many money issues and could afford to be more selective. I think he would have multiple Oscars if he was choosing his roles a little better. Instead people kind of think of him as a joke.

If you look at his early career, it is very apparent that he's a talented actor. Leaving Las Vegas and Adaption make that very clear.

Yeah, Adaptation is an amazing movie. You truly forget that both Nic Cage roles are by the same person. They're twins, but they have such different personalities and he nails it.

I'm definitely seeing this movie when it hits theaters.

I liked Willy's Wonderland even though Cage didn't speak a single line. Was a fun watch.

    He still makes movies?

I’ve seen so many actors go into oblivion…just vanish…Who is asking for Nic Cage movies?

surprised he still gets work…he seems kinda irrelevant to me…a has-been

When I think of Nicolas Cage, I think Walmart $5 bin or the deep dark crevices of Netflix or Amazon.

Do I have a false perspective?

    Do his movies do numbers?

Yeah he has made a ton of interesting and unique movies the last few years. Nothing cookie cutter which much of movies are these days as most my interest has transferred to shows if I am going to watch something on tv at home.

Nic Cage's voice is slowly becoming Tom Brokaw's.
