I'll be honest, the only problem I have with that at first sight (I haven't thought long about it) is, it needs to be a 100% proven case, due to the irreversibility of the measure.

Also might be a good idea to pin down what qualifies as rape.

I mean if it is proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, it is their country - sounds like a fair treatment.

Means 2 of our Supreme court justices might be Unuchs.

There will be times when you question the savagery of a law but that probably means the victims go through something even more brutal.

I don't know the enforcement rates or the chances of success but that's equally important. Places like India or Saudi Arabia rig the results so that there's a ridiculous burden of proof on the victim. The law looks strong but...

Really dumb law. I understand Nigeria has a problem to address. But criminals are not much deterred by the severity of a possible punishment, they are deterred by the certainty of being caught. And the chance that they are caught is very low. They've also increased the statute of limitations for bringing rape charges, which will probably be a lot more effective in combatting rape than increasing the penalty will be. In fact, the brutality of castration and death penalty might actually hinder prosecution of rape cases because victims or witnesses might be deterred from testifying because they don't want to have it on their conscience to do that to someone, even a rapist.

A better approach would be to spend money on a public awareness campaign, to provide more outreach to create a safe-feeling channel for rape victims to report, accessible infrastructure for quickly testing rape kits, laws that give prosecutors the tools to effectively prosecute cases, a judicial process that doesn't retraumatize victims, appropriate penalties for the convicted, and a pathway for the convicted to reform and rejoin society after their punishments. Rape is hard to police given the secretiveness around the crime and you won't get rid of it, but you can reduce it with a comprehensive approach without brutalizing members of your community. Creating severe punishments looks more like grandstanding to me -- pretending to really care so you can get the applause without actually fixing the problem.

Ah, the policy point with the biggest overlap of agreement among our resident gasbags from Both Sides: a vengeful State keeps us safe, and more importantly, righteous.

Can that number ever be attained on a consistent basis? Probably not...

Not just that. When you create these type of Draconian laws, often the people with political power will fabricate narratives about there opposition being pedophiles and use this law to execute them.

Yeah, but what if we're really, really, really sure the person's guilty?
