I disagree, but you are free to your opinion, I just don't understand why you think Chet has the highest offensive ceiling when other guys have shown far more offensive skills. I really don't understand the disrespect Banchero gets, not saying he is the guy who is the best, but he is the most complete package all around.
First of all, Green is on the rise. But whether he can become a franchise player is yet to be seen. Secondly, who says you can only have one franchise player? If you have a chance to get a franchise player, you jump on it, and worry about fit later. Lastly, I really don’t know who will be the franchise player in this draft. But other than Ivey, the other 3 top candidates are all front court players. Any one of them can fit with Green nicely.
I think Paolo maxes out as an all star type guy, he won’t ever be the go to guy on offense imo. He will be an excellent secondary scorer, facilitator and Robin, really high floor. Chet and Jabari have defined roles, 3&Elite D immediately. Chet has the upside on offense to be elite. Right now Paolo floor is higher.
Just to clarify, they were 19th in PPG. While very close to bottom 3rd, you could actually say they were around average (middle 3rd). On the other hand, they were dead last in opponent’s PPG, so it’s hard to question the need for a defensive presence. On a team that finished with the worst record, you can make the argument that they “need” whatever they can get. The thing about Chet is that you don’t really have to sacrifice offense to get the defense.
Better shooting splits, better efficiency and already has good handles with room for improvement. Paolo could be elite there, he does have some solid vision. But he has to be able to get his shooting numbers up because he’s not beating many NBA players with his face up game. He’s going to be really good if he can develop a 3 pt shot. But I don’t think he will ever be the go to guy in scoring or playmaking. Since he doesn’t offer a ton more than those two things his ceiling is lower imo.
I know I’ve gone back and forth with you on Paolo, @jiggyfly but most of it is messing with you. I like Paolo, he’s 3rd on my wish list. I’m just not as high as you are on upside with him and feel he’s redundant with Alp and Green to a lesser extent.
It's because Banchero lacks all of the primary skills you want from an NBA big man in todays game. Reaching high levels above the rim, shooting, and impact defense. Most of us feel that you aren't gonna give Banchero the ball and let him run your offense from the top of the key in the NBA, so how valuable is his ball handling and court vision really? Holmgren and Smith have major value without the ball in their hands, what does Banchero have if he's not handling the ball?
Better shooting splits? Are you kidding me? One guy was the focal point of the offense and the other guy had 80% of his shots come from putbacks and spot up 3's of the catch. I can say everything you said about Banchero and apply it to Holmgren, he is going to have trouble beating guys off the face up because of his size, and they will be checking him with smaller players like Arkansas did. Banchero offers rebounding along with scoring and playmaking and it's interesting you think those 2 things are not some of the most important things a NBA player can do. Holmgren has not shown he can do any of those things at the level of Banchero, but somehow he can be the franchise go to guy?
The fun thing is that in a month we’ll know our pick # and those of us that have gotten comfortable with any of the 3 bigs (like myself) aren’t worried about picking #3 (even #4 given that Ivey could be drafted ahead of one of the 3 bigs). I’m pretty excited about our chances of getting one of those 3. I think we are sitting as pretty as possible. Super excited about the draft and the future even though the season was terrible.
Chet has a clear advantage in shooting and his shot is almost impossible to block. Paolo is an average rebounder for a big man, Chet is a much better rebounder. Chet is also much better off ball and a lob threat to go along with elite defense. You’re right, Chet might not ever develop a consistent face up game in the NBA. Even though he has shown it at all levels. What does Paolo offer outside of face up game and facilitating? Specially when there isn’t a team in the league that will have him as a primary ball handler.
Wait wut? So scoring, playmaking and rebounding are not primary skills? It's very telling that you use the word big man when he is just an all around basketball player, no NBA team is going to just look at him as a big man and by the way what do you an NBA team asks a big man to do in today's NBA? Who is most of us? I don't think you are going to give Banchero the ball and run your offense, but also nobody out of Ivey is going to be able to do the same, so I don't understand your point. Banchero can play off of other players, he just happened to be the only guy who could play make and score at a high level on that Duke team, he ideally would be a secondary playmaker, you act like if he does not have the ball in hands he is useless, what does Green do when he does not have the ball in his hands, should we dock him for that?
It's definitely a better feeling than going into last year's lottery with almost a coin flip's chance of not even keeping the pick.
Also, this is why it’s hard to converse with you. This is just patently false. When have you seen Paolo block a shot or grab a defensive rebound and go coast to coast for the dunk? Or trail 3s? There are tons of videos of him from elbow and high post with spins to dunks, fade always along with elite lob game, put backs and spot up 3s
Banchero is an ok rebounder. Stop with this there was no other playmakers in Duke, stop. Banchero at best is a secondary playmaker, that’s high side and not likely. The problem is he doesn’t offer much off ball
Chet showed minimal face up game in college, Banchero has a clear advantage in being able to create his own shot and posting up. Banchero averaged about a 1.5 rebounds less than Holmgren, playing along with a guy who was a much better rebounder in Williams than any other Gonzaga player outside of Holmgren. Banchero does not have to be the primary ball handler to have his face up game and facilating be valuable, you really are reaching with that. So Senguns face up game and facilitating mean nothing since he is not the primary ball handler or Tate for that matter?
Paolo isn’t going to be above either of those players on this team. That’s the problem. Rebound % is in extreme favor of Chet, minutes played is a factor. Timme is an elite college big man, Williams averaged 7.4 rebounds. In fact, almost every advanced metric is in Chet’s favor. And stop lying, Chet showed face up game a ton. And post game is basically a wash for them both.
Ok I see you are getting worked up and getting in your feelings, nothing I have said is patently false. We have done this dance before, not going there with you, again.
You know that rebounds just equate to missed shots right? The more reliable stat for predicting if someone is actually good at rebounding is TRB% where Chet is at 19.8% and Paolo is 13.2%. On paper they are not comparable. If you just take stats Chet is an all time defensive prospect, like if you look back historically at freshman big men, Chet is going to be #1 in close to if not all advanced stats. He’s not normal. I can understand concerns about translatability but there isn’t a stat that’s going to make Paolo better than Chet defensively. Paolo is a great player and i would be thrilled with him here. I don’t want to put a ceiling on any of these guys. I just personally think Chet is THE GUY in this class and it’s not close.
