What does this mean for a potential Tucker and Yordan extension with these numbers? Of course they prob need another year or two of production but man...it's gonna be expensive
Tucker and Alvarez have very similar value even though they are very different players. I will be surprised if Houston is able to extend either of them. I think a "fair" deal would be something like $110M/5yrs starting in 2023, plus maybe some award (all-star or MVP) and games played incentives that give them a chance to add another $5M/yr. That would cover their arbitration years plus 2 free agent years where they'd both reach free agency at age 30. But I don't think Tucker or Alvarez will go for that. They both got large bonuses as amateurs and will get some add'l security as soon as next season via arbitration. Both are on track to get to free agency in their 20s and it'll be hard to talk them into giving that up. They both could be dreaming of $300M contracts at this point.
For anyone who doesn't think baseball players are superstitious (nugget gleaned from the NYY/BOS game earlier today): Matt Strahm, pitcher for the Sox, got a haircut before a game in 2017 and that night blew out his knee pitching. He has not had a haircut since.
With Diaz being a FA after this year do you think we try to resign him? With Yuli getting older I actually wonder if Diaz would be open to being the heir to 1B
Expanding on a comment in the soon to die Angels thread, I decided to research the position played by the most successful Managers in baseball history. Since I know I'm biased toward Astros Managers, I will used a list prepared by Bleacher Report from 2018 who has an East Coast bias. Their list: 1. Joe McCarthy - Hitter Unspecified Minors - Cubs 1926-1946; Yankees 1931-1946: Red Sox 1948-1950. 2. John McGraw - Infield PM Orioles 1899; 1901-1902; Giants PM 1902-1932. 3. Walter Alston -1B - Dodgers 1954-1976. 4. Sparky Anderson - IF Legion - Reds 1970-1978; Tigers 1979-1995. 5. Tony La Russa - IF Minors - White Sox 1979-1986; Athletics 1986-1995; Cardinals 1996-2011. 6. Joe Torre - C - Mets 1977-1981; Braves 1982-1984; Cardinals 1990.1995; Yankees 1996-2007; Dodgers 2008-2010. 7. Miller Huggins - 2B - PM Cardinals 1913-1917; Yankees 1918-1929. 8. They must have updated just after I posted. Before I ask about the line-up today, do you see it yet? I see Arizona, but not the Astros. Though they do have SP for the Mariner's series now. Odorizzi, Verlander, Urquidy.
