“US cities hit all-time murder records.” Fox News and Republicans have jumped on this and framed it as a “Democrat” problem. They blame it on Democrat’s “soft-on-crime” approach and have even referred to a New York District Attorney’s approach as “hug-a-thug.”

The rate of murders in the US has gone up at an alarming rate. But, despite a media narrative to the contrary, this is a problem that afflicts Republican-run cities and states as much or more than the Democratic bastions.

Eight of the ten most lawless, high-murder states are not only Trump-voting states, but GOP bastions for the last quarter of a century.

In 2020, per capita murder rates were 40% higher in states won by Donald Trump than those won by Joe Biden.
The five states with the highest murder rates, all Trump-voting states, had rates at least 240% higher than New York’s murder rate and at least 150% higher than California’s, the homes to some of the largest cities featured prominently in the “crime is out of control” narrative.

Three of the five states with the largest increase in murder rate were Trump-voting Wyoming at 91.7%, South Dakota at 69%, and Nebraska at 59.1%. These states are decidedly rural and do not conform to the chaos-in-the-city meme that has overtaken the crime debate.

Jacksonville with 176 homicides and a murder rate (19.776) more than three times that of New York City (5.94) has a Republican mayor. Tulsa (19.64) and Oklahoma City (11.16) have Republican mayors in a Republican state and have murder rates that dwarf that of Los Angeles (6.74). Lexington’s Republican mayor saw record homicides in 2020 and 2021, with a murder rate (10.61) nearly twice that of New York City. Bakersfield (11.91) and Fresno (14.09) each have Republican mayors and murder rates far higher than either San Francisco or Los Angeles.

A more accurate conclusion from the data is that Republicans do a far better job blaming others for high murder rates than actually reducing high murder rates.

The rate of murders in the US has gone up at an alarming rate. But, despite a media narrative to the contrary, this is a problem that afflicts Republican-run cities and states as much or more than the Democratic bastions.

What a sad list of states. I mean other than maybe New Mexico, can we all agree that nobody would particularly care if those states were not part of the USA?

    Don't they have death penalties?

I mean, if that's a great deterrent, those states should apply it for corrupt politicians

But New Mexico crimes are committed by New Mexicans and they count as double.

I was shocked that Jacksonville, Florida has 3 times the murder rate per Capita of New York City.

They are soft on crime in their own corruption, that's for sure. They are also soft on any type of training, licensing, and gun requirements. They make it easy for millions of gun toting fools to pack and carry on the streets, and then you have a few thousand crazies getting triggered!

I am surprised the SEC still recruits so well. The ACC and Pac 12 should be sharing these stats during their recruiting visits.

    I hear ya.

This was more bait for the mojo commodore trader Jorge community that likes to go on and on about how Democrat run cities and states are all going to hell etc. Certainly, there are plenty of good people in these states, and I am sure there are redeeming qualities of these places such that I should spare them the rod …. Like Cajun food or the Smokey mountains.

That said, it is exhausting dealing with the (speaking way overly broadly here) general stupidity of the electorate in these places that continue to support things and people that have brought this country to where it is politically today. Granted, much blame lies with the trumpers and his progeny, and their campaign to foment racial divide, white nationalism and just general dumb assery.. But on some level, the blame must also lie at the feet of these people who continue to drink sand. And the ugly truth is that they drink sand because unfortunately, they agree with some of these things inside somewhere.

The USA is the largest group project in our lives and, as with all group projects, the diligent, intelligent, level headed students are having to carry the load for the morons. Rewind to early pandemic and we saw this front and center. It continues in other facets of life and politics today.

Coincidentally a bunch of those states tried to not be part of the USA once because they really *needed* black people.

The stuff they don't want put in history books. I think back on what a painted version of history I was taught as a kid.

We never learned how differently black soldiers were treated compared to the white war heroes we learned about. Imagine serving your country and being told we don't serve n*ggers at this diner when home on leave, and in uniform.

Makes me wonder how they interpreted their Bibles in the Bible Belt to think that way.

I'm surprised that Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach are very high on the list of the cities with the highest murder rates in the US.

Black people commit more total murders than everyone else at 14% of the population.

I think that's Fishers point, if not, it should be because that's all I can interpret it to say

I know that would not be a Fisher type post

    @deb4rockets

I've edited this twice I wanted to make sure you saw it

Edit: Fisher doesn't like me saying this but we graduated the same year from the same school long before posting here

I had one class with him, he was in A.P., he was in A.P. classes. He was ahead of me. We had one black kid out of like 11 in A.P. classes freshman year. Sophomore year he got in a bad accident racing another kid home from school. Both were hurt badly but the black kid was worse, in the hospital soloing he had to repeat the year and he transferred. He had a Geo Prisim the other kid had a bad ass Camaro

So I ended the top black kid, not by a lot but they announced it in regards to National Merrit Scholar or something to do with the S.A.T. during morning announcements and I was embarrassed because everyone knew I wasn't that "smart".

I was being judged against the other black kids but from what I remember that's not what they said but I was as top in some category that basically meant the black kids. So people were asking what my score was

Yep. The wealthy cocaine party scene in Scarface land. Lots of drugs brings lots of murders from the sellers to the pushers.

The FBI has the Kentucky murder rate at half that amount, so I am not sure how accurate their numbers are.
