I'm going to point out the NATO Alliance has benefitted the US far more than just militarily. By keeping Western Europe as becoming part of the Warsaw Pact allowed those countries to build up economies that are major trade partners with the US. A big part of the US economic success following WWII has been trading with countries that had been devastated by the war but were able to rebuild into vibrant economies.

This is the problem that too many look at the situation as a zero sum game without considering that these are long term investments that pay off not only from a military security standpoint but also economically.
