I don't think I understand what this is saying. If race presents as traits that are socially constructed, how is that not also true of gender?

Gender is the "socially constructed" categorization of sexual characteristics that an individual presents. When a trans person seeks various operations, hormone therapy, or changes their apperance/mannerisms, they are seeking to adhere to socially constructed norms for people of the opposite sex.

Do we really understand what's going inside a person to make them feel like they should be presenting as the opposite sex? I don't think we do (could be mistaken). And so, I wouldn't presume that this is fundamentally different from what is going on when, say, a white person who grew up immersed in black culture feels they should be presenting as a black person.

Can someone help me understand what I'm missing?
