Watson wasn’t a ring leader in the worst baseball cheating scandal since 1919. Basically tarnished our 2017 World Series win

Ehhh, not really. The Astros offered him a more lucrative (over the course of the whole contract) deal, but with no opt outs. The Twins may have offered him a shorter (therefore less lucrative in total possible money) deal, but the opt out after year 1 and 2 make the difference (and the AAV of the two offers is nearly identical). By going to the Twins he actually chose the money because he’ll likely sign a mega deal in free agency either next year or the year after.

Crane will spend money on the right players. He won't spend money just because he has the budget to spend.

I would say mercenaries rather than traitors.

But Carlos Beltraitor sounds so much better than Carlos Belmercenary.

Of course that was before he redeemed himself by returning and helped the team win a world series.

    Why is that foolish?

We have done it most years since we have been contenders.

We have made moves in the past yes. And I give management credit for that. But our farm system was stronger and deeper then, and there will very likely be many more buyers under the new format. Also, I’m talking about a move that’s at the level of signing Correa to the Minny deal. our most impactful acquisition was verlander at the deadline. It is a heck of a thing to bank on something that big happening, when they had a viable option right in front of them.

I can justify the non-signing if we extend Tucker and Alvarez.

Although I think Pena if not this year, will soon be an above average shortstop.
All we can do is wait to see if this was a good move or not.

Not disputing this. My comment on the medicals was to make me feel better about letting him walk. I would have preferred to let this group of guys have another shot or two. Our comradery already took it on the chin in my opinion with Springer leaving. I just hope this does not further impact it. The 2017 group had fun. Not sure I have seen that same fun even though last years team played in thr big dance.

$50 million to Verlander for potentially 2 shitty seasons is a team friendly deal?

If Verlander pitches crappy this year, I assume he will take the $25 million player option. He could then pitch crappy again.

That clearly is not a team friendly deal.

That's a worst case scenario. And even then, 2/$50m for a pitcher of his upside is still a great/team-friendly deal. Scherzer got 3/$130m. Even coming off Tommy John, I'd take JV's contract over Scherzer's contract every time. Upside with limited (not zero) risk.

Elite starting pitchers and elite position players are not the same thing at all just due to scarcity. An elite SP is more likely to swing a short playoff series than any one position player, hence are worth the risk and investment. Verlander probably could have had this deal with any team in the league just on upside alone. But it seems like he values his legacy and felt that the Astros would be his best shot for another ring.

I agree that the expanded playoff format will reduce the sellers at the deadline and drive up the prospect cost. This is where we will see if the Astros are "all-in." If an impact player is available and they have a need, I hope they will sacrifice some of the future to get him.

I believe him to be an honorable man and also felt like he owed them at least the first opportunity after his last contract did not work out. I also like to think his preference is to stay as long as he is effective as a pitcher.
