You can’t go wrong with either, Wemby is probably the higher upside because of frame. But Chet is faster and more explosive, has more perimeter game than Wemby. Wemby to me is longer Gobert with good offense.
While there is such a thing as being too tall for your arms (see: Kristaps Porzingis), I don't think there's such a thing as having too much wingspan in basketball. Unless VW has zero skills (See: Mohammed Bamba, Bruno Caboclo), his insane wingspan alone should propel him to defensive anchorage. Though I do see your point on him getting pushed around, at that height your center of gravity can become untenable (see: KP) As for Chet's wingspan, I've heard everything from 7' 3" to 7' 7". I'd be extremely skeptical if he refuses any measurement by an NBA team. I do want to see how Victor does in the French league next year, Doncic and Sengun won MVP's in the 2nd and 3rd best basketball leagues respectivley at 18. France is the 4th best league out there, and if VW dominates that like the other two he's a lock for #1 overall. Also, filling yourself out with muscle doesn't make you less mobile, it makes you even quicker and more explosive at the cost of endurance. As Fast-Twitch and Slow-Twitch muscle are somewhat mutuallly exclusive.
I have watched every Chet and Paolo game. I’ve been able to watch a few games of Wemby, not near as much though. He doesn’t play a ton of minutes, so I’ve tried to watch old stuff to newer to see how he’s progressing. Don’t get me wrong, he is an elite generational talent. But he is more of a true center and he will still have some of the injury concerns that Chet has due to his size.
I don't see them doing a whole hell of a lot in FA this year. Outside of Ayton, I don't see a player that I'd want to invest big money in. As of now the roster is exactly the same except for Schroder & Fernando being replaced by two first round picks. Sure there's a lot that could change between now and opening day but I don't expect dramatic changes. Wall isn't going anywhere, that contract is still untradable. EG & Wood will be difficult to trade in season. Much like Theis last year they'd almost be forced to cut someone to make room for multiple salaries in return for either. Getting it done in the offseason you don't have that problem with expanded rosters (20). Otherwise I could see EG expiring a Rocket and you get the combined cap space of him & Wall in 23/24 and that's when they spend on FA.
I know you're a Chet Head like me but do you have Banchero at 2, 3 or 4? I'm Chet, Jabari, Paolo, Ivey as BPA and Jabari, Chet, Paolo, Ivey for fit. Paolo's recent surge in playmaking and shooting has me questioning whether he is underrated and it just took him a while to get his rhythm. Draft process is going to be interesting.
I was thinking more in line of the vets that we can bring in to fill in the gaps for this. That's my fault for not clarifying my previous statement. You're right though; we're not (or shouldn't) be in a position to get any big name free agents this summer.
I’m probably Chet, Jabari, Paolo, Ivey in both scenarios. But I’m probably swayed because I want size and defense.
Paolo's recent surge has him back in the top tier for me. I know teams try not to get too excited about the NCAA tournament as it is just a few games, but Paolo's surge is now at about 10 games.
What is your opinion on Jalen Brunson? We should still have enough to get 1 max free agent in 2023. Defense is my only issue with him, and I'll wait to see if teams can capitalize on him during the playoffs there. Offensively, he scores well, facilitates the offense, and doesn't turn the ball over much.
once tanker always tanker... imagine if jalen green gets injured and done for the season next year in november or december? whats gonna be the solution? Lets tank this year! imagine if its really grave injury? Solution: lets tank this and the next year... because we aint winning nothing this year and we need infusion of talent once tanker always tanker...
agree . He needs to be able to play the “3” meaning , he needs to hit the 3 . And guard the perimeter too .
Even bringing in a vet pr two to fill in the gaps seems unlikely to me. Currently there's 15 players under contract - two of them expire and two draft picks incoming to replace them keeping them at the max # of roster spots. I suppose they could cut or trade one or more of the young guys - who would you cut / trade to open a roster spot for a veteran ?
No, if we had our own pick we shouldn’t tank in 24. It’s a 3 year process. Burn all the salary to the ground. Make your trades. Make 5 or 6 picks. Sign 2 big time FA. Don’t sign any money during that process. Rockets screwed that up a couple ways but unless they do something like win 35 games next year they are fine.
