There's no 1 to 1. Who cares about what people are comping him with overall? Take elements from people's games and try to extrapolate on it to explain to people who aren't watching closely what they can expect. I like what KOC does at the ringer with his "shades of" method.

Paolo isn't a bad defender, at this point he just isn't some elite defensive stopper. At this point if I were to project, I would equate him to like a Tobias Harris on that end. He's not going to hurt you defensively but he's not going to lock down the best player on the other team.

His negative image on defense is all narrative. We won't know exactly who he is for a few years but he has the same measurements as Ben Simmons who I consider a top 5 defender in the NBA. Ben Simmons was also known as a poor defender at LSU.

So. Will Banchero become Simmons? Probably not. BUT. it's not fair to write off anyone doing anything at this point.

I’m just trying to understand where the Bron thing is coming from

Bron has basically been his team’s PG or primary playmaker from day 1 and has 1 of the highest BBIQ’s in NBA history…Paolo’s level of playmaking and feel for the game is closer to the likes of Melo than it will ever be to Lebron

Bron’s feel for the game is rivaled by guys like CP3, not the Paolo’s of the world

He has a 6'10" wingspan and is 6'4" in shoes, or at least was before this season started.... he is a couple inches shorter than what would be the perfect size for a combo guard, but his wingspan and body control more than make up for it. There is an interview somewhere that has Jaden's coach discuss his wingspan and height.

He is a perfect match with Green in a lot of ways, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

I know the Rockets need a legitimate inside force defensively to cover some of their defensive limitations physically, but I would be willing to find a 3 and 4 that can defend and shoot if we have to get a Capela type 5, if that means having a backcourt of Green and Ivey, especially in transition.

    We've been over this.

Just like LeBron...just with far less of his 2 most impressive attributes.

Pretty soon we're gonna get a Hakeem comp, just with less shot blocking and post skills.

It's almost like we share a hive mind in this regard. I'm looking at those two together and feel like you've resolved 2/5 of your starting lineup. 3 and D forwards are much easier to come by to help spread the floor and then you round it out with a rim running, vertical spacing, rebounder, and shot blocker. Plus you have cap space down the road to add another start frontcourt player and Jaden Ivey and Jalen Green backcourt will be enticing. Guys are going to want to play with them after seeing the excitement they bring to the game.

True but Blake's always had that 3 pt shooting touch. You specifically talked about Detroit Blake and at his peak in Detroit Blake was an absolute spacer taking 7 threes a night for 36% before he got old and washed. Harris has good 3 pt percentage but only takes 3 three pt attempts a game so I dont really consider him a good spacer.

We have precedent of bad shooters turning into good shooters in just 1 year like Cade or even Chet Holmgren who shot 26% in high schoo but 39% in college so I'm not worried about Ivey. More importantly even if his shot isnt sustainable Ivey is a freak athlete for his position just like Ja or Ant so he'll still do damage even with a wonky shot. Cant say the same for Banchero cuz his specialty is hoisting mid range jumpers aka the worst shot in bball.

shades of Blake Griffin, shades of a lesser Melo on offense…shades of nobody great on defense

some people might think that’s great and be excited about that, I’m just not one of them

if we end up with the 4th pick, then sure…even I’d eat at Arby’s if dying of hunger and there’s simply nothing better

I don't have him 1 or 2 but if the Rockets drafted him there, I think I would be fine with it. They have a lot more information than we do. About a month ago if you told me anyone but Chet would go #1, I would scream into the abyss. Now? I think I could see any of the top 4 going there and if Shaedon enters the draft, I could see him going there too. It's good that there is some parity being formed. A lot less potential FOMO if the Rockets can properly finish this season.

It isn't all narrative though. He doesn't have the same type of feet that Simmons or other high level defenders have and he also doesn't have the step to make it up either. He may prove to be good enough if he has other good defenders around him and uses his strength, but the tools are not there to be a really good defender. The issue with Ben Simmons was completely different. With Simmons it was an issue or effort and sloppiness. At LSU he was out of shape, skipping class and gave little effort. LSU didn't even make the tournament that year with Simmons. The concerns with Simmons were centered around work ethic and desire... and those have largely proven to be true.

With Banchero I haven't heard anything really negative about his work ethic. I have heard some scouts complain that he gave up on some plays defensively, but that is really common. I have seen Ivey and even Smith do that at some points. With Banchero you have to put him next to someone that can alter shots (because he doesn't) and you have to realize that he can switch some on 5's but isn't going to switch well onto 3's. That doesn't mean he can't be an all star and a good player, but it is a limitation to his game.

I do agree though that comparisons are not always super helpful and great players often defy comparisons. What would the comparison be for MJ? LeBron? Nowitzki? Harden? Great plays defy their comparisons to prior players.

How is he not on Melo's level as an offensive prospect?

He has as much range and is a far better passer and playmaker.
That's why I said Lebron 1.0 yes lebron is a far better passer and playmaker.

Stephen A and Bayliss made careers questioning Lebron's aggressiveness before he won a chip and most people blamed the 1st final's loss with the Heat on Lebron not being aggressive.

Just google Lebron not being aggressive enough and everybody and their uncle has some kind of take on it.

Yes and both are the same age, have known each other for years and have strong work ethics and have avoided issues off the court. They should set a strong culture within the organization. I am not going to be all that worried about figuring out the other positions if they end up with Green and Ivey... this isn't Beal and Wall....

I just want to say, I've been saying "Banchero" like it rhymes with "Rancheros" and I'm not afraid to admit it.

Ordinary 3nD forwards are easy to get like Garrison Matthew but star 3nDs are hard to find. I can really see only 2 guys Klay Thompson and Khris Middleton that is it. A star 3nD means he is efficient even with high volume, he will pop off for 15-25 pts consistently. He can also defend the other team's best player and also make plays around the hoop. What you usually have a limited 3nDs like Garrison Matthews isnt consistent at high volume and guys like Bertans dont even have defense they just have 3 pt shooting. Some people are good on both sides of the ball but are short and timid like PJ Tucker or guys like Danny Granger whi are wildly erratic etc.

Nahh Blake was a horrible 3 point shooter in college and when he first entered the league.

Banchero is by far a better shooter than Blake was at 19.

And If it’s the norm for bad shooters to become good shooters in as little as one year, then what’s stopping Banchero from becoming a good shooter?

There is no question that for years people questioned if LeBron had the killer instinct.... he passed up shots in key playoff games well into his career and he also made some very questionable plays at the end of games. He is very lucky that Ray Allen bailed him out at the end of the Spurs series because LeBron was a disaster and handed that series to the Spurs before Allen and his heroics.

Some form of miscommunication going on here. I AGREE that Paolo is not as good as Melo. You compared Melo to Arbys. That I disagreed with. Re-read.

Dude has a mancrush on Banchero pretty obv by how defensive he gets on reading any criticism regarding his guy.

To even mention Banchero on the same level of Chosen One Lebron just tells you that dude has the blinders on lol. If Banchero has Lebron comps he's be undisputed no 1 just look at Zion in 2018 draft class.

Banchero is a big man only because he is 6'10 if you are judging him as a post guy you are doing it wrong.

Paolo is shoting over 52% in the tournament and even better from 3 so i don't know where you are getting your info from.

Smith has zero dribble game and finishes worse than Banchero, playmaking is more important than shooting IMO and I would say Banchero has a better chance to improve his shooting than than Smith has to be able to create his own shot or be a plus playmaker.

Yes star bigs do have playmaking and putting the ball on the floor abilities it's what sets guys like Embid, Jokic and Giannis apart, I really don't understand what you are talking about with this and Banchero is more of a wing than a big man, but he has plus post up skills.
