I saw Rashida Tlaib's "Progressive response" and to say it was "not needed" would be kind. Sort of like the Republican response it wasn't a direct response as it didn't directly respond to what was in the SOTU. It also didn't help Tlaib that a lot of what she brought up Biden had brought up earlier.

She did bring up a lot of criticism though of the filibuster and the Senate.

Most of all though it was a political ad with a call at the sign up for her political list at the end of the speech. Given that this barely received any coverage I doubt it means much.

For those who want to see it there is the link:

I brought this up in the SOTU thread but I think the speech laid out a pretty good plan for the Democrats to follow going into the Midterms. His note of bipartisanship I think was the right one because the majority in the next Congress will be decided on the margins. His "Unity Agenda" I think is something that will be hard to Republicans to campaign against but it matters how much the Democrats stick to it.

One of the most telling parts of the SOTU was that some one of the biggest cheers that Biden got was when he said "We should all agree: The answer is not to Defund the police. The answer is to FUND the police with the resources and training they need to protect our communities. "

Right there should tell Democrats where that issue stands but even without it "Defund the Police" was a terrible slogan and one that voters from NYC to Minneapolis soundly rejected.

Has there been any prominent Democrats who have been for teaching CRT?

Most of why I hear is that CRT isn’t actually being taught as the academics who teach it at it is high level theory and no one seems able to define it.

You cannot make this stuff up. If they actually believe this stuff, these people have truly lost their minds. That is not an exaggeration.

Kamala Harris Says Voters 'Got What They Ordered'

Vice President Kamala Harris told the Democratic National Committee on Saturday at its winter meeting that the Biden administration largely came through on the campaign promises proposed during the 2020 election cycle.

"Our task is to show people that, in many ways, they got what they ordered," Harris said. Right? They said this is what they wanted. They stood in line. They took time from work. It was difficult. And a lot of what they demanded, they got. And so let's get out there as we do and remind them of that."

"We have a record -- a record to be proud of; an agenda that addresses the biggest concerns here in America, in people’s lives; the message that resonates," Biden said. "Now what we have to do is we have to sell it with confidence, clarity, conviction, and repetition."

Yes the Biden Administration has delivered on many promises.
    1. They got a major COVID relief package passed, that also happened to provide a temporary relief for poverty.
    2. They got a major bipartisan infrastructure package passed that even many Republicans including those who voted against it are trying to take credit for.
    3. They got a bill improving US competiveness against the PRC passed with bipartisan support that among other things seeks to bring back competiveness to the US.
    4. They did end the US military commitment in Afghanistan. While I felt the actual withdrawal was handled very poorly they did get it done.
    5. They did make COVID vaccines widely available to the point that now we have a glut of vaccines.
    6. They have gotten many vaccines out to the rest of the World to the extent that the US is leader in supplying vaccines.
    7. He did unify NATO. Well maybe we can credit Putin for that.
    8. The economy is growing very fast and job growth is at record pace.
    9. Prior to the leadup to the war in Ukraine the stockmarket had not just rebounded but was reaching record highs.
    10. He is increasing investment in green infrastructure and resilience in dealing with climate change.

Now obviously it's not perfect and there still are some very big problems. As stated the withdrawal from Afghanistan was handled very poorly. Inflation is a real problem and it's certainly not all to due to the what is happening in Ukraine. Even though COVID numbers are plummeting far too many people have been infected and died from it. Crime is still a problem in most US cities. Out of those four the withdrawal from Afghanistan is clearly on Biden. Inflation was already starting to rise prior to Biden taking office and crime had already started to increase back in the Summer of 2020. The first two waves of COVID happened under the previous Administration.

harnessing the Ukraine war for Democratic votes

Biden, Democrats infuse Ukraine crisis into a recast election-year pitch to voters
In a string of political meetings over the past week, the president and his party made clear they hope to pin blame for rising gas prices and other issues on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/03/12/biden-ukraine-russia-midterms/

    excerpt:

PHILADELPHIA — President Biden and his party have moved in recent days to reorient their election-year pitch to voters around Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — seeking to shift blame for struggles to tame rising prices onto Vladimir Putin and promoting the White House strategy to punish the Kremlin as a muscular response to a geopolitical threat.

Democrats said they hope the message, which they honed in political meetings over the past week, will help address some of their biggest liabilities ahead of the November midterm elections. Chief among them are Biden’s low approval ratings and a widespread perception that Democrats are at fault for a sharp increase in inflation.

Now, Biden is repeatedly bringing up “Putin’s price hike” at the pump. White House officials have distributed talking points to allies urging them to echo this line. And Democrats are touting the economic sanctions Biden has leveled on Russia, contrasting them with former president Donald Trump’s praise for Putin.

“That economic bomb that went off inside that dictator’s regime in Moscow would not have been possible without Joe Biden’s leadership,” Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.), who leads the House Democrats’ campaign arm, said during the recent House Democratic retreat.

It is unclear whether a revamped message will be enough to help Democrats overcome this year’s stiff political head winds, particularly after months of internal party feuding over Biden’s domestic agenda, portions of which have stalled on Capitol Hill.

Although some Democrats have pointed to encouraging signs in recent public opinion surveys, including support for Biden’s handling of the Ukraine crisis, the president’s overall ratings continue to be underwater, with 42 percent of Americans approving and 52 percent disapproving on average this month, according to a Washington Post polling average.

Republicans, meanwhile, have accused Biden of trying to blame Putin for problems that predated the invasion of Ukraine, saying the administration failed to do more to reduce gas prices and stem inflation. Some in the GOP also have called on Biden to do more to help Ukraine.

“Unfortunately, the Democrats’ wayward leadership for the past year has undermined America’s energy potential with senseless policies that seem designed to reverse decades of success and wreak havoc on our gas prices,” wrote House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) in a CNBC op-ed published online Friday.

Democrats acknowledge that they continue to face enormous challenges. The unfolding events in Ukraine — and how they might affect Biden at home — are highly unpredictable.

Yet, at least for now, some of the gloom that saturated the party as recently as last month has given way to more outward signs of confidence.

    And Now, Gasoline ‘Stimulus’ Checks
Democrats want to pay you to consume more fossil fuel.
    By The Editorial Board
    March 23, 2022 7:00 pm ET

Once Congress adopts a bad idea even in an initially worthy cause, it invariably spreads to become a terrible idea. That’s the case with federal “stimulus” checks, which began as Covid relief and now are being proposed to offset the rising price of gasoline.

A trio of House Democrats—Mike Thompson (Calif.), John Larson (Conn.), and Lauren Underwood (Illinois)—have introduced the Gas Rebate Act of 2022 to send Americans a $100 check in any month this year when the national average gas price exceeds $4 a gallon. Dependents will get another $100, so the family of four can fill up that SUV on Uncle Sam’s dime. The national average price has exceeded $4 in recent weeks.

The word “rebate” is a misnomer because this isn’t rebated from any payment to the federal government. It’s a government check to pay for higher gas prices caused in large part by government. Voters are blaming Democratic policies for inflation and for making it harder to produce American oil and gas. With an election coming, and their majority in peril, Democrats are resorting to what they do best: Spending more of your money.

The non-rebate rebate is even worse policy than the gas tax holiday that some states are proposing. Neither addresses the real problem, but at least the tax holiday lets people keep their own money. The rebate idea deserves to die in the crib, but the spectacle of climate-change warriors suddenly trying to subsidize fossil-fuel consumption is almost worth it.

Appeared in the March 24, 2022, print edition.

The problem is they are not giving you your money. They are taking your money and giving it to other people (at least insofar as the you referred to in the article is concerned), just like the COVID stimulus checks or the child tax credit.

Huh? So I wouldn't get a check under this legislation?

If you have a registered car you would. Whether or not that check is more than the government is taking from you to pay out those checks is probably going to depend on how much money you make. I also don't know if, in the final form of the bill, everyone with a registered vehicle will receive a check, regardless of income. I didn't receive a COVID stimulus check, but I sure helped pay for other people to get them.
