These are Extensions to work on: Kyle Tucker - Begins Arbitration 2023 Yordan Alvarez - Begins Arbitration 2023 Michael Brantley - FA 2023 Yuli Gurriel - FA 2023 Ryan Pressly - FA 2023
Based on how the Altuve/Bregman extensions have gone… and based on what free agency looks like for players if they stay healthy and don’t have chronic back problems… I’m less optimistic that early extensions really benefit both parties as much. it’s fine if trying to optimize a contending window… which is what is likely happening when you sign Verlander for 1-2 years… but in 3 years, the Astros have more questions at the moment than answers. extending Tucker/Alvarez/Framber could work out more like when the Astros extended Lance/Roy vs the current golden era.
Not surprising because I think there was an article last week but Tucker today said Astros hasn't reached out to his agents regarding an extension.
Tucker and Alvarez should have their Arb years + 2-3 FA years in extensions. No urgency this season. Gurriel will take a 1yr deal.
Gurriel - I'd go with 2 year plus incentives. He's been a bargain so don't go cheap. Mayne 1 year with a team option which vests with easily met incentives. Yes he'll be 39 next season, but Batting Champion at 37? Do it. 1B glove a plus. I wouldn't usually for after a player approaching 40, but he's like Verlander and worth getting as much as he's got. I'd love to get a trend of vesting options for clubs going. I hate the player turnover brought by FA. I know the players don't like performance based incentives, but the time has come.
So how much do we forecast their extensions? Tucker and Alvarez will both turn 29 in 2026, their agents would love for them to hit the market before 30 I bet.
Alvarez value just went up that much more with the NL agreeing to the DH. As for Kyle Tucker, he’s an Astros for the next few years. If he breaks out as a perennial MVP candidate, he’s going to command the 300 million contract, if he’s an all star level guy, the Astros have a number and they won’t budge $…. But I think the Astros will be fair, because a team has to pay 25 guys plus the minor league guys too…
I would definitely extend Tucker and Alvarez if they would go for it. Just don’t think they will. They both will break the bank if they hit FA before age 30.
I don't envision Alvarez accepting an extension. As much as I love Michael Brantley & Yuli, they are old and probably best left to FA and re-signing them then if necessary.
Already seeing pessimism on here about extending Tuck and Alvarez. This is precisely what I was b****ing about in the Correa thread. Click needs to get that **** done. Eventually we are gonna have to find ways to keep guys like that or the whole damn operation is going to go up in smoke.
Extensions soon for Tucker, Alvarez, Framber, and Luis Garcia while they are cheap Or else the 2026 lineup will be: Pena SS Barber LF Whitaker RF Leon CF K.Lee C J Perez 1b Barefoot DH Nova 3b JC Correa 2b
