How delusional some of you are… is sad. Carlos wanted a long term mega deal like anyone in his position would. He bet on himself and earned it. No one is to blame but ownership period. Defending management is dumb. If you refuse to offer him a legit long term offer and then refuse a short term with opt outs you were being either incompetent or greedy… or both. The deal he took was very similar to the verlander deal and no one was like “how dare verlander ask for a player option.” Correa was a million times more important to us than old pitcher that can’t stay healthy and hasn’t pitched in 2 years …. Idiocy… being those kinds of fans is how our city gets decades of crap from the Texans because the city still goes out and supports them no matter what BS they throw on the field.
No, it wasn't. 5 yr / 160MM for his prime and then making him a free agent after his prime is the worst possible deal he could take.
Everyone said no to Correa and a 10 year mega deal. Why? Yankees, Dodgers, Astros, Rangers, Cubs all passed.
Blaming management for not paying a player as if he had no injury history is dumb. I guess 29 other teams are just as dumb as Houston.
the cap went up considerably…after most FAs signed. Things changed teams had more money than they realized. I understand not giving him 10 year 350 but not taking a short term opt in/out deal is just pathetic and stupid. We gave almost the same deal to freakin verlander!
This article on Peña speaks highly of him….https://www.lmtonline.com/sports/amp/It-s-Jeremy-Pena-s-time-in-Houston-16606023.php
Yeah....that was a one off from Correa though, he's typically closer to 3-4 WAR himself, so even keeping Correa, that's probably what you'd have gotten. It's telling that no team bought his fluke 7 WAR season as something they could realistically expect him to reproduce....if they did, he'd have gotten MUCH better offers. I'm just ready to move on. I don't like the ridiculous drama of players who hold teams hostage like Correa did this year.....and he'll want to do next year too.
The Houston Astros offered Carlos Correa 5 years, $160 million. That’s exactly how cheap they are (not). Carlos Correa is a Minnesota Twin because he didn’t want to be a Houston Astro.
I 100% trust the Astros org in finding a replacement that will match or be better than Carlos... If they decided not to match for whatever reason I am totally onboard..... As for Carlos, shame on him..... The doors were wide open for him to stay an Astro.... Its w/e, good luck facing The Stros in the playoffs.... Gonna need it...
I doubt we are seriously in on Trevor Story, it looks like a PR move for the fan's benefit. I think the FO is just high on Pena (rightly or wrongly) and he has to be called up this year or risk exposing him to Rule V next year (I think). Kicking the can down the road with Correa just wastes one of Pena's cost controlled years. Again, I'm no expert on MLB service time rules. It makes sense if they are going to invest those funds on a different upgrade somewhere else, but I am not seeing it.
Maybe, but if we are just "high on pena" and never planned on signing Correa or Story Sucks that we didn't spend anywhere else Or maybe it shows the direction we are heading when it comes to spending Crane has made an absolute fortune on his purchase of the Astros
Well, at least we know Pena can turn on an 85mph fastball. So, he has that going for him. Which is nice.
