I'm not sad, he's opting out after one year and starting this circus all over again.

They have a shot at Story and they have Pena. The Astros will be fine

Boras did what was best for his client - the long-term deals didn't appear, so he got a 1 year deal with an extra $70MM in emergency protections.

Correa is very knowledge about contracts and was heavily involved in his free agency. He's not getting scammed by Boras.

Astros had 2 years to offer something to Correa to keep him here, and they kept making insulting offers and ultimately it appears it cost them.

If I saw Correa agreed to this deal without a team associated with it I'd 100% think this was a typical Astros short term deal and been amazed they pulled it out. Correa said multiple times he'd take state tax into account so the Astros could have offered less and matched the net pay.

Correa got a much better deal than 1 year $35 million that you say the Astros could have signed him for.

Why would he have taken 1 year, 35 million?

This has all the making that he believe he can get a richer deal after 1 year with a high-profile team after this season. Twins is a whole lot better than joining Yankees, Dodgers, or AL West. The only sadness I have is that he defends HTown like no other. 1 player does not make 9 players and we wouldn't make it far last year in the playoffs without pitching against the Red Sox. Time to watch Astros Correa tribute when he comes back home as a Twinkie.

The solution isn't to spend more money on inferior players.

The payroll flexibility might help at the deadline...

Story is an awful hitter outside of Colorado. Arenado and Tulo were good hitters outside of Colorado...

A reasonable expectation for Story would be our 8th hitter and a .230 average with a out 15 homers...

.240 hitter with .750 OPS. Diaz and Pena could probably do that. Story is a 6 to 8 million dollar player .

I'm saying if the Astros offered the same deal as Minnesota, but were committed to letting Correa go if he opted out next year. Then the Astros get 1 yr, $35MM. Or 3 yr, $105MM. But they don't "have to go through all this again next year". They just move on if Correa opts out and got a wonderful 1 year deal in the end. His wanting an opt-out shouldn't have been a deal breaker.

yea that’s not great lol. I’m looking at baseball savant, his spray % is more of a pull and up the middle hitter. They have expected homeruns by park and Minute Maid would of projected him out to 41 homeruns last year. My brain is just scrambling to think how we can get better and I’m hoping him potentially playing at Minute Maid half the time will do well for him, but yea those home/away splits don’t look good.

edit: looking at those expected home run stats by Park some more, they are pretty high across the board lol

Forgive my ignorance but to think that the Astros “couldn’t match” the Twins deal is a big assumption. This is Boras we’re talking about here—whose to say he didn’t tell Crane “either you give Carlos his 10 year contract or we’ll just sign with some piss poor team and re-enter free agency next offseason?”

I highly doubt Boras was going to give Crane and the Astros that kind of sweetheart deal to begin with.

No trade clause means nothing on a 3 year contract and it looks like Correa wanted a fresh start no matter what, just used the Astros as leverage as much as possible.

That is nauseating to read. Let’s pay story who isn’t half the player Correa is 90% of the money. This is why Houston franchises get away with mediocrity. No penalty from the fans for incompetence

The opt outs being the deal killer feels like spin or imaginative fans trying to make excuses for Crane and Click.

This isn’t complicated people. The 5 year offer was never going to happen. It was a short term deal with opt outs or a 10 year 300+ that’s it.

Had he signed the 5 year deal he would never get his big deal as it would put him in FA outside of his prime.

Everyone in baseball knew he would not and should not take that deal. Even if it was the same annual as the twins deal…

Twins deal pays him more per year and let’s him retest free agency to get a big 10 year deal later.

The reason it was brilliant for us is we don’t have to worry about locking him into a 10 year deal and possibly being shackled to dead money but get him to win another WS at least one more if not two more years…

We did nearly the same for verlander at nearly the same money … it’s a loser mentality and absurd incompetence to lose him to that deal … period. It’s an embarrassment
