every draft these days has a bunch of teenagers, that doesn’t mean much please name the MJ or Dream talent in this draft…just to even be mentioned, the 3rd best player in this draft would have to be Barkley level (MVP, 11x All-Star, 11x All-NBA) stop disrespecting the 84 draft
People seem to forget we are talking about the draft as a whole there are 60 people in a draft. Most drafts have 3 stars ok MJ's draft has 4 stars with MJ, Hakeem, Barkley and Stockton but I dont know about the rest. If the rest are weak then its just a top heavy draft. But I cant really comment on MJ's draft cuz I dont follow 90s bball. I'm just saying to me a draft is good if you have a lot of talent across the draft rather than concentrated on 3 guys. For example Harden's draft is trash tier even if Harden and Blake Griffin are in that draft. For me the strongest drafts in recent memory are the 2018 and 2019 drafts. For 2018 you have talent across the board and I see at least 15 guys who will be seen as decent players in the NBA, and the top level have Luka, Trae Young and Ayton who all figure to be all star caliber players. 2019 is pretty similar with Ja, Garland, Zion and Herro as the top tier talent but even in the lower part of the draft you will find guys like KPJ and Nic Claxton. 2021 is starting out pretty bad, even the top rookies kinda suck. I mean Cade and Mobley are seen as the top talent but if you look at their stats and compare them to rookie Luka, Ja or even Lamelo then you see a difference esp in their efficiency. However my opinion is 2021 is just a lot more developmental, you got guys who need some time to adjust to the NBA. Once they mature this draft could be the deepest one for a while cuz I see lot a of decent guys with potential late into the 2nd round.
Barkley alone blows Mobley out of the water. 15 years only 1 year with single digit rebounds at 8.6. Rookie year. Undersized and fiercer competition.
3 of the top 10 in 84 were busts. I don't see ANY out of this top 10 being busts. Yeah, 84 is chock full of all time greats. But this is a historic draft too IMO. This draft could go almost 20 deep without a bust.
We are talking about the draft as a whole not individual players. Sure MJ's top tier talent is S level, but in a draft you care about quantity even more than quality since there are 60 draftees. 4/60 is only 6% of the draft. 2021 just happened how can someone have 11x All NBA in his rookie year lol what are you even saying?
Depends on what "rival" means. I mean Honda's lineup gets better mileage than Lamborghini's, but I'd rather have a Lambo. Not even close yet, imho, and shows no indication yet of being remotely close. Jordan is arguably the greatest player ever. Olajuwon is one of the greatest to play the center position. Stockton is one of the greatest to play the pg position. Barkley is one of the greatest to play the pf position. This doesn't even get into the players like Sam Perkins, Alvin Robertson, Otis Thorpe, Kevin Willis, Jerome Kersey, etc. That draft was even giving us referees like Leon Wood, coaches like Rick Carlisle, and dunk artists like Terence Stansbury (statue of liberty ftw!). LOL. Seriously, though, no telling how much greater it would've been had Sam Bowie not gotten injured. Re-evaluate in a few years ... right now? There's just the potential for a lot of good-to-really good players in this draft.
No. The 84 draft delivered! Top 5 PG Stockton SG Jordan PF Barkley C Dream This could possibly be matched someday, but never beat.
Yea increasing the variability I don't get the comparison. This class doesn't stack up to '03. Maybe '09 would be better.
You could argue it is a deeper draft when everything is said and done. MJ and Dream easily make it greater for the next decade....
no sh*t someone won’t have 11x All-NBA in his rookie year…don’t quote me dumbass sh*t thinking you’re smart what I said is pretty clear 84 draft wasn’t just MJ, Dream, Barkley, and a bunch of scrubs…
Fiercer competition? Can we out that lame argument to rest? Its been 40 yrs since the 80s happened ok? I dont care how physical those guys are in general they're weaker than today's NBA. It's like saying Euroleague players are better because in Euro league players are more physical and the skill requirement is higher.
You're the dumbass here why's you even write if if you know its dumb? Even Barkley didnt know he will have MVP and 11x all star in his rookie year how you expect anybody in this draft to say they will be an 11x all star player? You want everyone to wait 11 yr from now and then say the 2021 draft has a Barkley level player? LMAO!
MJ has to be matched for that to happen and a Shaq or Kareem level guy has to emerge next to that new GOAT caliber.
this is getting embarrassing for u now me: 3rd best player will need to end up at least Barkley level in order for this draft to be mentioned with 84 u: a rookie can’t have 11 all-star appearances, what are u saying your reading comprehension is sh*t tier, so not surprised u couldn’t comprehend
Except that the Euro League is a different beast, like a hippie version of that, and slower, lower level.
Unfortunately, if the careers of 2021 draftees run longer than 20 years, some of us will not live long enough to be around for the final reckoning of this debate. Unless I can make it to the ripe age of 84...
Yeah and 80s players in general prob wont even make the GLeague today. Thats the problem when people take people in MJ's time and try to use stats to make arguments for GOAT or w/e in the 80s if you are a dunker you are automatically a human highlight reel. Nowadays dunking is something almost everyone can do.
I am not genetically programmed to live that long to evaluate all draft classes. The likelyhood that the 84 Draft stays the best or second best in my lifetime is given. It is fair to say that it has a good chance to stay the course. Other than Green and probably Mobley the others do not seem to be exciting athletes, they all might put up very good numbers. But they do not excite me that much. And anyone could be voted into the All Star Game ...... it is not the fairest indicator.
