I thought the tournament does not really move the needle, unless you are a bad team with a bad front office you don't put a lot of weight into the tournament. I mentioned this on this forum last year when Johnny Juzang played like he should have been a lotto pick in the tourney and instead opted to not even enter the draft, I dont think the tournament can make a guy go from mid first round to top 5.
Depends on what pick they end up with. If the Rockets get a top 2 pick, he definitely won't be.....after that, could get dicey.
Let’s face it how the top five prospects fair in the tourney will certainly impact their draft- I think Chet long term would be the best pick, we know for certain he will be a stud defensively - “Always go for the sure thing” - Jeff Van Gundy
Depends on what one considers overrated. He's probably not going to be a franchise player, but could be a very good starting pf. At picks 4-6 he's a solid choice.
Banchero is my third ranked guy, buy I could see him ending up the guy more capable of carrying a team than either Chet or Jabari. I don't think he's overrated at all. I also don't think he's a bad defender. I don't think he does as much as he could on that end given his attributes, but I watch a lot of Duke games and I don't see him just getting abused on defense. Duke shares the ball on offense so he doesn't just take over possessions many times, but when he does, the skill set is on full display. He's got to improve his shooting consistency, but he has a good looking shot so I think that will come. JMO.
All those highlights we saw of Banchero prior to this year where he was a dominate force were often against a bunch of 5'9" guys ... Far lesser competition. Now he's playing against guys more skilled or closer to his size and he's not that "dominate force" we saw previously in highlights. That's not to say he's a bad player, he's not bad, in fact he's pretty sound fundamentally and can play the 3-4-5 at 6'10. He'd be a great pick outside the top 5 for some team .... but picking in the top 5 the expectations are much greater, you are looking for a dynamic force that really moves the needle. That's just not Banchero.
It can def move the needle imo as you can see how the player plays against slightly better competition.
Smith is the sure thing in this draft not Chet. Chet is like the Evan Mobley of this draft, carries more risk than Ivey or Smith due to his unconventional frame but can end up being the best player in the draft as well. Chet is a stud defensively but so are Jabari and Ivey. Jabari can arguably be a better defender than Chet cuz he is more agile and actually has more muscle mass. Ivey has good length for a pg and is explosive AF, no reason why he can't be a plus defender at his position.
After the whole Green - Mobley debate last year and us getting stuck with the lesser player I dont know what to think in this draft. Banchero/Holmgren/Smith/Ivey etc. Too many damn questions
If you look at the odds Rox can go anywhere from top 1 - 5 which honestly isn't the worst thing ever. However chances of getting a top 1 pick is just 12% so just prepare to pick in the top 5 which would probably be either Ivey, Banchero or AJ Griffin at this point. Ivey is climbing up the ranks could end up being no 3 if he goes super saiyan in the tourney. But if he falls to us tbh it isn't the worst thing ever, dude's projecting to be a superstar pg in the mold of Ja Morant. AJ Griffin is kinda unknown due to him putting up modest stats for his team as well as coming back from major injury, but he also isn't a bad fit for the Rox as we need a young SF to pair with Green and Sengun. He is athletic and a legit sniper from 3 shooting 46% on 4 attempts in just 20 mins a night. It's crazy if Banchero falls all the to 5th but tbh I'm not that sold on him anymore due to how inefficient he is. Yeah the Rox are ok with mid range shots now but that's on the condition he can hit mid range at high accuracy, this dude is just a volume scorer so far can't score efficiently vs college competition he might be a bust in the NBA. We've seen a lot of these high ceiling mid range masters just flop in the NBA Josh Jackson, Killian Hayes, Kevin Knox etc so I dunno how he will translate in the NBA. He had some comps to Carmelo but in the current NBA an inefficient Carmelo Anthony isn't gonna be very good anymore and won't be able to coast his way to multiple all star appearances like what Melo did. In all likelihood though if the Rox do end up with the 5th pick Banchero will prob be off the board by then so either Ivey or most likely Griffin will be the only one left available.
Smith and Ivey have little to no questions to them. They're projecting very well in the NBA as future studs the same way Cade did. Chet has some questions mainly because of how thin he is, you don't know if he can bulk up without getting injured all the time. But skill wise he has no question and should be a productive player in the NBA at the 4 spot (barring injury). Griffin and Banchero have the most questions. Banchero is extremely inefficient and dealing with some coasting and being lazy accusations (aka Wiggins syndrome) while Griffin is coming off injury and hasn't seen much play. There's a chance somebody else becomes the 4th best player in this draft other than these 2.
Dont see him carrying a team. He can't even carry his current steam (who will flame out early in the tourney). This guy smells like Julius Randle. You're not winning anything with Julius Randle.
Understanding what the biggest weakness and need is here I guess. Is it size....is it perimeter D, is it transition and help D, switch D.......etc. One thing is for sure, athleticism and scoring alone is not on my list right now.
Would really like to see us get aggressive in this draft to secure smith. Sengun is going to need a 4 who can fill in where Senguns lack of size and athleticism becomes a issue. Smith looks like his body will easily pack on muscle snd I think we will need someone like him at the 4 if we are really banking on Sengun I wouldn’t give up much to move up for Chet but I’d cash in some of those early Brooklyn picks to move up for smith
Arguably, but his combination of quickness, size, and play making could be a valuable weapon in the Association. He’s not flashy, but at 4 or 5 a ‘sure thing’ like Banchero has to be strongly considered.
Precisely, Duke is stacked with future NBA players. If Banchero was on a team with lesser talent he would be putting up huge numbers. Same observation applies to Holmgren to a slightly lesser extent.
