Brinson is a big dude who hits with no average and little power. I don’t personally see much upside, but a minor league deal can’t hurt I guess. Again. Whatever...
I’m assuming Goodrum’s primary role will be to allow them to keep Pena down past the service time cutoff so they gain a 7th year. The new CBA didn’t do much to force teams to play their best young players unless they are extremely confident the player will succeed immediately and finish among the league leaders in war. $2.1M to give Goodrum a test run to see if he can be a good 13th man (over somebody like Taylor Jones) once Pena is brought up is an extremely low risk move. Of course this makes it abundantly clear they do not expect Correa back.
I really want the Astros to add an outfielder that will takeover for Brantley after this season and slide Tucker to CF for this season. I like the available corner outfielders this offseason better than next year. Next year the potential corner outfielder free agents are Gallo, Haniger, and Benintendi. I don't believe Nimmo or Judge reach free agency. I'd rather have Bryant, Schwarber, or Conforto....
He's only 12 months from TJ surgery. He won't be ready for opening day. It wouldn't surprise me if they take it slow with him.
He's been invited to Spring Training. He's throwing at 93MPH already. I don't see him being impeded from play.
Whitley had Tommy John surgery last March. It could take more than 12 months to fully recover. Putting him on the 60 day DL is not out of the question to start the season.
This is from 2 days ago.... "Whitley, now 24-years-old, embarks on an unknown season, that he will not be ready for by Opening Day." https://climbingtalshill.com/2022/03/10/astros-prospect-forrest-whitley-throwing-off-mound-video/
With OAK looking like another fire sale coming up…any trades that could make sense for both clubs? Olson in our lineup is interesting. Chapman as well but don’t really have room there. Any bullpen piece that match up well?
Olson's price will be insane and so will Montas. Manaea, Laureano, and Trivino make some sense Laureano still has 28 games left on his suspension though for PEDs.
The Astros will have to pay a little extra for dealing with Oakland. They were in on Bassitt- but the ask was too high and Oakland was hesitant to trade him to the Astros. There’s typically a higher premium when trading quality big league players within the division. That will be the case with any of Oaklands other big name players on the market
To clarify her tweet, IL and Option time are 10 days for position players, 15 days for pitchers. These were rule changes for 2020 that were not implemented due to Covid.
Taking a look at the data…looks like Goodrum is a decent 13th man option who was added to fit a SS platoon with Diaz in the event that Peña is not ready. I don’t love the move but also can’t really hate it. I believe with the new CBA structure we can still move Goodrum to and from the minors (similar to Robel last year)? Goodrum hits lefties well, and SS is his best position, and Diaz hits righties well…so I’m guessing this is a low-risk/not-sexy platoon investment
