Aside from leaving a dark precedent and blueprint for states like China to follow, the question of whether to continue cutting Russia off Swift remains. It's the main punitive measure of recourse the West has outside of putting NATO troops on foreign soil. Then you have to consider how long and effective this can last, such as Russia adopting a CBDC like China's or whether the suffering of ordinary Russians becomes a greater humanitarian issue. Saddam eventually found a way out of sanctions. Putin could survive even if it meant sucking up to the Chinese while they prop up a working alternative. Tough options.

Russia doesn't get to dictate what we do. Putin may or may not escalate. The thing with Putin escalating is that his hands are relatively full as is. Diverting and spreading their military more is very risky for Russia in their current invasion and will weaken them for further invasions.

Props to McDonald's. I hate their food (except fries) and don't really care for their company. But they are halting operations in Russia but still paying the workers. That's super cool and surprisingly principled of them.
