The neighboring countries aren’t any better (at least the racist groups ; don’t want to paint everybody with a broad brush)

Racism is in every country .
The US is unique cause it’s identity is multicultural. Look at China , they don’t treat Africans well either.
    Like I said

The world was able to confirm how racist those border EU countries were during the Syrian refugee crisis. Even highlighted how fascist Hungary had become, a country tourists generally associate with a cheaper visit up the Danube.

It's ironic how those neighboring countries like Poland were generally looked down upon as an ethnicity and treated like a geopolitical doormat, only for them to become among the most racially intolerant countries among the virtue signaling EU.

    Ironic but not surprising...

Yes the Ukrainian refugees deserve all the help they can get but it is just sad the difference in how they have been treated versus Syrian, Iraqi and especially refugees from African countries like Libya and Sudan. Many Europeans categorized them as an invasion that would be dangerous for Europe. The images of the children drowning trying desperately to get to the EU didn't change things much.

It also hasn't helped much that even American reporters are using terms like "civilized" to describe Ukraine compared to those other countries.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see many Americans willing to welcome Ukrainians to here even though there has been a lot of opposition among parts of this country towards taking more refugees.

This is nothing new or surprising.

Europe is a racist place.... especially in the Slavic regions, but really beyond that as well.

The USA is branded as a racist country, and it certainly suffers from racism but not to the extent I have seen around the globe. I think the fact that the USA has been multi cultural for so long, and that the USA media and citizens are more open discussing problems in the USA... that it gets a worse reputation than it deserves compared to most of the world. The USA has racial problems and needs to continue addressing them.

However, go to most of Europe and you will see racist beliefs and attitudes that would not be tolerated.... the denial of foreign born people in the Ukraine to get on trains before Ukrainians is not surprising and likely not viewed as racist by many people in the Ukraine. Europe in general doesn't viewed immigrants as a melting pot, you are expected to drop your own background and fully assimilate.

When I went to China for business years ago I was struck by how incredibly racist it was.

When I would travel to Northern Africa I even experienced some degree of racism directed towards me, but it did not bother me as I have not traditionally experience repression and I understood from the perspective of the Africans, I was an outsider and not as important or relatable as someone that is born in Africa. Having said that the level of racism I saw in Africa was very low compared to what I have seen in the rest of the world.

The reality is, in all my travels the racism sadly is fairly predictable.... black people get it the worst just about everywhere. Racism against black people in China was the worst I have ever seen. It is pretty bad in the Middle East as well and it is lesser but bad in Europe and the USA/Canada.

In general terms, black people and brown people get it the worst.... and in some cases it was puzzling to me. For example, home much interaction does someone from Estonia have with black people? How could they possibly have formed an opinion?

I hope everyone in the Ukraine gets out safe and survives and racism is a large problem in the world.

Racism won't end, probably decreased as it has since the beginning of human kind.
    Human beings are tribal.

only way to unite people, impending planetary doom

The reality is in Western Europe, most people are more concerned with or sympathetic to people that are either culturally similar to them or that look like them. It isn't a surprise to me because I have heard it expressed numerous times by Europeans I am close with. To the majority I know, it isn't racist or "wrong" but they view it as human nature and are surprised that Americans and some other parts of the world think it is wrong.

I spoke to a first generation family I know from Poland and they were surprised that there was any uproar that native born Ukrainians were given preference to flee over foreign students who they viewed as guests. Obviously it isn't this simple, as a deeper dive into the situation shows that there were acts that were just flat out racist and I don't think anyone could reasonably label as anything else.

As for the refugees from non European areas of the world INTO Europe.... the issue was also largely a cultural/religious one. Many Europeans are open to non-European immigrants BUT they expect them to drop their entire past and become European. That doesn't just mean language, but also dress, interests, even views on religion and to adopt what are viewed as Western views. As we both know, in practice that takes time, as acculturation isn't over night.

I am sure there is more than one, but the one American I heard use the term was born in the USA but has been the foreign correspondent in England for nearly 20 years. That isn't to say that there are not Americans that hold that same belief, but for the most part people in sensitive jobs know not to express such opinions.... while in Europe it isn't as taboo to say such things.

It doesn't surprise me. First there Slavic people in the USA that are in a position to welcome other Slavs to the USA. Second, the reality is that a lot of white people view European immigrants differently than other immigrants. We had the former President discuss wanting white immigrants coming to the USA.

It's just too bad that there is a group of people that openly hate that identity and think 'diversity' is a bad word and want us to be more like China or Japan or Russia.

I can feel that you are the type that attaches personal accomplishments to what random white people have done in the past

    "We invented democracy"

    "We invented electricty".

You seem like that type of person.

The whites aren't clamoring for involvement in Yemen, and the browns aren't clamoring for involvement in anywhere....

    Ain't no coincidence.
