What's that conservative group that infiltrates things? Sometimes I wonder if it's one of their "operatives" on the inside suggesting self-sabotaging **** like this. What the **** is so bad about just calling it Women's History Month?

no, this is apparently a real thing--the university backed off the "womynx" bit but only renamed it "Womxn" History Month:

    which is still kinda weird

Why does it matter if some academic uses womynx or latinx or whatnot?

in the cosmic scheme of things it doesn’t matter, but I suppose in the short term it just makes academia look ridiculous and contributes to the erosion of trust in higher education as something worth pursuing and/or supporting. If folks don’t care about that, though, it’s fine by me.

Are you saying we shouldn't support academics because a department decides to use a ridiculous spelling for a name in an attempt to change the way people think?

I mean, traditionally the value of a liberal arts education is in developing critical thinking skills that are highly valued in fields such as law but many others as well. I can understand why academia seems to hold little value given the cost and tangible output to society, but it feels to me the bigger reason is that academia tends to be liberal and that pisses conservatives off. When you say erosion in trust, that's the reason, right? It's the liberal attitude of people in academia, and to me, it's not a great reason to get rid of it.

And I don't think this erosion of trust is just for this kind of stuff, but it appears to be across the board - scientists are no longer trusted by conservatives, and neither is the medical profession given what we have seen with vaccines. It just seems that anything that cross conservative values is deemed to be not trusted and part of a "liberal agenda"

answering a response with a question of this sort is such a fraudulent way to respond. I simply said the following:

in the cosmic scheme of things it doesn’t matter, but I suppose in the short term it just makes academia look ridiculous and contributes to the erosion of trust in higher education as something worth pursuing and/or supporting. If folks don’t care about that, though, it’s fine by me.
that's what I said. I am not saying anything else.

I mean it was a rhetorical question meant to dive in a bit more - as I followed it with more discussion.

Anyway like I said, I see the issue not with the content, but rather the fact that academic leans left and that is the reason reason conservatives don't like (trust) it.

I am genuinely curious though how some department chair using a y in women would have any impact on the level of trust people have in academia. Doesn't that seem more ridiculous than using a y?

Look, if you posted a thread on campuses not letting any conservative voice speak, or that Trump is offensive to student feelings and therefore isn't allowed to be mentioned - I'd say yes - those are things that would legitimately erode the principles of what academic institutions are meant to strive for.

But this? I just don't get why anyone cares and I would like to understand, but I keep coming back to this: it's just a dislike of liberals and this is another way to mock them.

Agree with this general sentiment, but not a fan of the phenomenon of: one obscure tweeter / one youtube vid / one regional university to make some broader point about a given economic sector / demographic / political movement.

But yeah, compared to say 30 years ago, universities are simultaneously more interested in impacting social thought and also less in touch with the lives of real citizens, IMHO. It's been very painful and troubling to watch from the inside.

If this line of thinking catches on, I'm in BIG trouble:
