I know how this will skew based on the demographic of this forum, but it's an interesting discussion Examples: Nu Metal Bands: Korn Slipknot Linkin Park Papa Roach Limp Bizkit System of a Down Deftones Static X P.O.D. Mudvayne Saliva Some Kid Rock Hair Metal Bands: Poison Bon Jovi Whitesnake Mötley Crüe Cinderella Warrant Quiet Riot Extreme Skid Row Def Leppard Warrant WINGER
System of a Down. Deftones, Pretty frickin' awesome. The rest of Nu-Metal? Not so much. Though, Korn did have their moments. Overall it's gotta be hair metal, right? A lot of those songs are basically part of American Culture (even by the bands that weren't American). Nu-Metal has nowhere near the staying power.
I appreciate both. Didn't care of hair metal in the 80s...but have come to like and enjoy it. Cinderella is one of my personal favs now. Van Halen will always be a favorite also.

Added Ratt, Dokken,LA Guns, Hanoi Rocks, W.A.S.P, Lizzy Borden, and Slaughter. Borderline -- Aerosmith, Scorpions, Twisted Sister, -- classical bands who made that type of music. Nu Metal is great, but going Hair METAL, here.
"Nu Metal" is very serious about itself. Hair metal is anything but. Not a fan of either, but I dislike sullen pimply white guys with cornrows in oversized industrial clothes more than I dislike prancing clowns in spandex. Hair metal guys would be more fun.
We need TheFreak to weigh in but I guarantee you that he would pick hair metal. I will also go with hair metal. I have more thoughts on this but will save it when I have more time.
Lol, so you're got 3 articles saying that Van Halen was an influence on hair metal. Well, no ****. Led Zeppelin was an influence on Metallica but nobody in their right mind would lump them together in the same genre. Especially love the 2nd article, Van Halen's right there *as an influence* with Elton John, David Bowie, Slade, Lou Reed etc...
Ok so here's my take on these 2 genres: Hair metal aka pop metal aka glam metal - very popular in the 80s, especially on MTV and you can find the most well-known bands in this genre listed above by Xero. Is Van Halen hair metal? Well it's a similar question to "Is Led Zeppelin or AC/DC heavy metal?" My answer is no to both of these questions although I can see why some might think VH is hair metal, especially when they were fronted by Sammy Hagar. Def Leppard, which very few people are aware of, were actually a New Wave of British Heavy Metal band that became a pop metal or hair metal band once Pyromania became so successful. They had an album later in their careers called "Yeah" (I think) which were actually surprisingly good covers of a lot of glam bands that were big influences to them. But these bands were seen as "less threatening" as some of the other heavy metal bands that were coming around at this time - bands like Venom, Bathory, Death, and of course all of your thrash metal bands. They also were bands that leaned more into the pop side of music. Hair metal bands were really hard rock bands that catered to pop radio and MTV and they loved to sing about girls, sex, partying, good times, etc. Warrant was probably the classic poster child of a hair metal band. Hair metal became so popular that even Aerosmith dabbled in it during the '80s. But it wasn't very innovative and didn't really have any substance to it. Do I listen to hair metal? Not really but I do have some albums but I tend to heavier stuff in heavy metal - classic metal like Judas Priest and Black Sabbath, thrash, NWOBHM, and even a little bit of power metal and black metal. Hell, I am more interested in Viking metal than hair metal, lol. But hair metal peaked in the late '80s and it is probably true that it got killed off (not necessarily killed but less popular) due to grunge music. Nu metal? Well it is one of the very few metal genres that I really can't get into. The funny thing is that I am a fan of Faith No More and they were one of the godfathers of nu metal but some of these bands like Limp Bizkit (yuck), Godsmack, Staind, System of a Down, Puddle of Mudd, Korn, Slipknot, etc. are ones that just do not appeal to me at all. The Deftones aren't terrible but for the most part, I never listen to anything nu metal even though I do have some nu metal albums.
