Why Is The Left Ignoring Ukrainian Gun Rights?

There has been a media frenzy over Ukraine. Strangely enough, missing from the coverage of the war in Ukraine is that Ukraine recognized the importance of an armed population.

Ukraine has recognized this importance, so much so that they recently just issued 10,000 automatic rifles to the civilian population. All anyone needs to do is receive one is show their ID.

This is a huge development that has largely been (unsurprisingly) ignored by the corporate media. We know the reason why; the Ukrainians are about to demonstrate to the world why the founding fathers of the United States enshrined the right to keep and bear arms in the constitution, right after the right to speak freely, no less.

On Wednesday, the Ukrainian parliament passed "Law #5708 on the Right to Civilian Firearms". A spokesperson for the Ukrainian government was very clear about the purpose, saying: "This bill is to ensure that every citizen receives the sacred right to self-defense."

So why is it that this movement to expand gun rights has been largely ignored by the media?

It’s been brought up in this thread multiple times. I love Ukraine’s gun laws and think we should mimic them.

Why is the left ignoring a scenario where people didn't have guns but are being issued them by the government at a time of national defense? Are you really praising Ukrainian gun policy?

Probably because the Ukraine isn't doing this because they think it's a good idea - it's because its their last resort. They don't WANT the populace to be armed and fighting Russians; they have no choice because their military isn't very powerful.

The US, on the other hand, has the most powerful military in the world built to defend it. And two ocean borders so that an invading army is unlikely to result in guerilla warfare on US soil.

If Ukraine survives this mess, they are going to hate all the new guns floating around their country, but they had no choice.

But if other countries decide they are not doing business with you, it's still the same, no?

And if it is the primary global reserve, does that not make it easier to cripple a country if you just **** up their power grid?

What were the betting odds that Ukraine would be the bridge to world peace?

Interesting take: Russia invaded because it knew that it would not win if it waited longer because of the effectiveness of the Turkish TB-2 drones at shredding Russians offensive and defensive efforts (see Syria, Armenia, and now Ukraine). Russia would not be able to hold the eastern provinces it tried to core with its causes belli once Ukraine got enough of these drones.

They could also buy them back in a national incentive program and keep issue them again as needed.

When Putin flees the country, will Trump offer him a cabinet position?

Right who knows what would happen, but Ukraine is not a country that was full of citizens armed to the teeth with more guns than people so I'm not clear how them issuing weapons during an invasion justifies current US policy. Or has anything at all to do with US policy, pro or negative. Not EVERY LITTLE THING is proof that Republicans are right lol.

This felt unrealistic a week ago, but the insanely powerful international response and Ukraine holding out weren't see as likely. It feels like now it's becoming MUCH MORE likely. If 20% interest rates and runaway inflation and limited currency supply and no international transactions and no rich people partying all over the world sticks, Putin is toast.
