It was never about Ukraine being in NATO for Putin - that was a red herring. If Ukraine made any move to joining NATO, Putin would simply invaded sooner. But this is about Ukraine being under Russia's orbit and always staying there just as @justtxyank pointed out. That is why Putin doesn't need to occupy Ukraine from a military standpoint. He just has to destroy the military and economic infrastructure enough, and force the political system to dissolve - expect him to arrest all pro-western Ukrainians at the very least. So long as Ukraine is run by pro-Russian folks, Putin will be satisfied. Annexing Ukraine isn't achievable given how small Russian forces are
Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia are already members of NATO and are either closer, as close or negligibly further away from Moscow than Ukraine.

The travel time for a ballistic missile from Poland vs Ukraine is negligible. In fact, it might be faster from Poland than Ukraine. I am not even sure a ballistic would need to exit the atmosphere from either Poland or Ukraine.
Yeah yeah, I know he wants a puppet government - and he will try to chop off the head of the current freely elected one and replace it with one of his own.... This won't work - he won't leave, the Ukrainians will have a gorilla war just like Afghanistan did and Russia won't be able to support it financially. It is too bad that the Ukraine was not focused enough on say the border of Crimea to roll through there as Russia tried to roll through their country, the only thing Putin will respond to is force. Right. Rubio has been remarkably clear eyed and honest mostly in his discussion of this. Putin's demands were never meant to be met. He wants Ukraine back in his sphere. He's tried to do it by simply toppling Zelensky from within and it didn't work.
