Actually I think in 2014, when we said eventually Ukraine would be a part of NATO and we refused to guarantee it would never be in NATO....this for Russia (and I am not making excuses) is equivalent to parking missiles on it's own borders ala the Cuban missile crisis. The mistake was ever electing an idiotic failed TV star as President, when he is known to be crooked his entire life. What we didn't count on was so many American's being unable to think critically for themselves and try to elect a dictator... Good thing more than 7 million figured it out......and kicked his ass to the curb by the 2nd term. DD

Right year wrong reason. It was 2014, but not because of NATO directly but rather the Maiden Revolution when Ukrainians protested and kicked out the pro-Russian gov't. That is what upset Putin and freaked them him out.
1) NATO is a defensive alliance. The only "risk" to Russia of NATO accepting Ukraine is that it would mean Russia would have to fight the world if it wanted to occupy Ukraine. Soviets parking weapons in Cuba is not close to the same thing. Russia was positioning itself for first strike capability against the United States. 2) Regardless of rhetoric, Ukraine has not been advanced forward with regards to NATO membership in large part to pacify Putin. 3) It defies logic to think that Putin would Ukraine alone if the USA promised it would not defend Ukraine. 4) Important missing information is that Ukraine overthrew their puppet government. Prior to that Putin had a level of control/power over Ukraine even if he didn't occupy it. Losing that power is what has set all of this in motion. He has worked through various means since then to get that power back. He has backed political movements, separatists movements and now an invasion. He wants control of Ukraine, he's very open about it. He throws the NATO thing out there, but in his full comments he spends much more time OPENLY admitting that he doesn't believe Ukraine is a sovereign nation and that it is by right part of Russia.
Yes, but somewhere NATO said we would go there eventually - this will have to end militarily - if we let Putin Consolidate in the Ukraine he won't leave - if we want NATO in the UKRAINE we should act like it is already part of it......they are reaching out for support - the only thing Putin will understand is a show of force. If we don't want war, and I don't then I believe the Ukraine is done for....we can send all the supplies we want but without tanks and warbirds, they are toast. DD
This exactly. His efforts to get control of Ukraine have been escalating since then. He seized Ukraine, he's backed political efforts to retake the government and then he outright backed a separatist war. It wasn't working. Now he's moved on to the next step. His rhetoric around Ukraine is very telling and should not be ignored. He has long lamented that Ukraine became independent.
