Yes 2001 Sorry memory isn't what it once was and I responded without any research. My point though was that it's the nature of baseball that the best teams don't always win. I will argue to my death that the 2019 Astros were a better team than the Nationals And 2021 Astros were a better team than the Braves. It's about health, rest vs rust, timing, momentum, and luck almost as much as talent.
Yep. All that being said, Scherzer/Strassburg were better than Cole/Verlander. Having two aces pitch like aces in a 7 game series will win a lot of teams a lot of series.
I saw a rumor on a different site from someone who has posted credible info in the past that Lance will need another Tommy John surgery and the Astros expect him to be out for the season. That would be pretty devastating for both the Astros and McCullers (although Lance got his payday so less of an issue for him).
Wait what? Have I missed you saying this before? That would be awful for our 2022 staff. Why would they be waiting to have the surgery?
That’s why I didn’t say anything. It was just a rumor and it didn’t make sense that if he knew he needed TJ he wouldn’t have already had it and announced it. So I was skeptical. But that tweet is more smoke so the rumor is a little more credible. Hopefully not…
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/02/mlb-free-agent-sluggers-brad-miller-overlooked.html I agree with the theme of this article and think Miller might be a good fit for the Astros as a 13th position player who can be a backup option at 4-5 positions and offer a good lefty bat. Given the questions around the diamond for the Astros (Yuli’s/Altuve’s/Brantley’s age, Bregmans/Meyers/Diaz/Yordan injury history) it might make sense to spend a few bucks to make sure the bench is as deep/versatile as possible.
B Miller always leaves much to be desired. Inconsistent at times but a good utility option/PH bat. Anytime I see him play, I think of earlier in the year when he hit three homers in Wrigley on Sunday Night Baseball. He’s got pop.
I'm not that worried (aside from Snake's post). The less innings he pitches, the less fewer chances he has to get re-injured. I also think Lance is pretty clearly eager for the lockout to end and so he's going to speak about how owners are hurting players. It is an offseason thread during a time MLB is not allowed to conduct business so there really isn't anything exciting going on, especially since there is a separate thread to discuss the lockout.
I know he doesn’t make any sense but it’s hard not to want Freddie Freeman in HOU. Reports out that he’s unlikely to resign in ATL…it’s prob far more likely that an NL team nabs him, especially with the DH coming soon…maybe LAD goes for him. Hopefully Freddie could take some Correa suitors out.
Makes plenty of sense. I've thought about it the last few weeks. Freeman is the best hitter available. His contract demands fit in line with what the Astros are willing to do with a 6 year deal. We've also seen 1st baseman have success into their late 30s like Yuli and Votto. He's an on base machine and hits for average and power. Sign him and have Yuli get 400 plus ABs backing up Bregman, Altuve, Freeman, and maybe Brantley some in LF at Minute Maid. Also makes the opposing manager's job a lot tougher in a close game when you know the Astros have the reigning AL batting champion on the bench to bring in during a big late inning situation. Also gives you protection if Pena flops and the Astros need to slide Bregman to SS. Yuli can step in at 3rd.
'93 NL West: Dusty's Giants win 103 games. Cox's Braves win 104. ATL went 7-6 in the season series, would be interesting to review those games and see what couldabeen
Can't speak to anything regarding the rumor, but bad idea to have the surgery before a lockout - you don't have access to training / rehab / etc. Player doesn't want to be responsible for any of that themselves. Team doesn't want it out of their control.
Of course he has a trainer, and a pitching coach, and facilities on par with MLB Spring Training. This is Union bullsh!t. The corresponding Owner bullsh!t will be dropped soon, if not already.
I don't want McCullers or Verlander rushing to get back into the groove once the lockout ends. I feel that's how Verlander hurt his arm with the 2020 season. Disappointing that McCullers is always hurt. Hard to have confidence in him pitching a full seson...maybe we wont have a full season this year. That could be a positive for us with Verlander and McCullers getting healthy again.
yeah, I do like how freeman would fit with the organization and do think we have the flexibility to make it happen. His addition would really vault us into powerhouse territory for the next ~3 years pitching aside…man what a scary lineup. I think my concern is with the expanded playoffs, I could see Crane/Click being a bit more conservative…but I think expanded playoffs could go either way, I.e., signing a Correa/Freeman level player may not be as detrimental if ~7 teams per league get in, as opposed to the classic structure to date.
