I agree, Banchero can play good defense when motivated. And he is plenty strong to bang in post and athletic enough to defend perimeter. But do not think he will ever commit to being a consistently elite defender. It's a mindset. If he had that mindset, Banchero is easily top overall pick in draft. Think a 6'10 Cade Cunningham.
With a better 3 pt shot he'd be a top 5 pick. While he won't ever likely be a marksman from 3, he shouldnt be left alone out there either.
Herb Jones was passed on a lot because of this and his three-point shot is looking decent there this year. Eason is an intriguing prospect.
I have watched him play in 4 games so far. In each game, he took way too much time off on defense. I don’t see that dawg personality consistently that this team is in desperate need of. If you don’t think Chet is a big then you are not watching. He is absolutely relentless as a defender and rebounder. I haven’t ever seen him take a play off. And, yes, 3P% is a concern for a PF in the new NBA. I’m not going to be horribly disappointed if the Rockets get Paolo, but I do have my concerns with his defensive mentality and 3P%.
You have a right to your concerns and my concerns with Chet is can he generate offense in crunch time and does he have that give me the ball in the final 2 minutes mentality I want a guy who can create his own shot and create for others if, he has lapses on defense, you can work on that, the fact remains he can play defense at an average level and is not a liability.
WOW! So Yiannis, Davis, Tatum, Wiggins, James nor Durrant could not get by him? This hyperbole has to stop. Did you mean the WCC?
That is a valid question, because I have the same concern. Having said that, I don't know that there is anyone in this draft like that. The guy with the most physical ability to be that way is Ivey, but he is a guard. In fairness to Chet, he has actually been creating more for himself and others lately. He has pulled up in the paint a few times, he has had a few fadeaways as well. He isn't as smooth as Smith at pulling up or Ivey or Davis; but he does other things better than them. With Green and Sengun already on the Rockets; they really need to get a really good player that can also be very good on the defensive end. Had they taken Mobley or Barnes at #2 it wouldn't be such an issue. Banchero offensively is a good fit for the Rockets (or anyone really) but no so much defensively. I actually would be happy with Ivey if the Rockets don't get a top 2 pick..... Green defends point guards better than shooting guards and Ivey has the ability to be a very good defender. He has a long wingspan, very good athlete and has shown surprising court vision this year. Ivey would cover a lot of Greens weaknesses.
I don't think you draft anybody at this point and time because of fits for Green or Sengun who have not established themselves to be worthy as having a team built around them and I am definitely drafting for defense fit at this point because you can get that later in the draft or cheaper in trades or free agency. Have not seen enough of Ivey to have an opinion, The rockets will probably misses out on the big 3 so i need to start taking a look at some other guys, would not surprise me if 1 of the 3 drops below the top 5 and that guy might be Chet which I would not mind at all if he drops a bit.
They will win against anyone, on skill. Blow by on sheer athleticism isn’t going to happen. No, you need to stop. Period. Chet is the best all around player in this draft. Paolo might not even by top 3 at this point. You want a Julius Randle with handles clone. I’m not interested in that
You don't have a clue. Especially if you think Paolo is a Randle clone, nobody I mean nobody has used Randle as a comp for Paolo. Unlike Chet Paolo has actually shown all around skill at a high level. Fun fact Holmgren has a higher to% than Banchero who handles and playmakes a lot more
I agree with you in a vacuum but the reality is that Stone has to operate on the assumption that Green and possibly Sengun will be on the Rockets long term because if Green fails he is likely out of a job regardless. That shouldn't be his concern but I would bet money it is. This draft isn't very good in the middle, and it lacks a clear cut franchise player at the top, but it is a good overall draft in the first 7 picks. There is a bit of a division after the top 4 but 5-7 are better than most 5-7 picks most years. Holmgren/Smith have at this point edged themselves slightly above Banchero at this point (it could easily change) with Ivey being viewed as a really good prospect but below the top 3..... then after Ivey there is a space and Sharpe, Griffin then are kind of the top of the next group with Davis and Murray and Washington and Mathurin. There are obviously guys that can fall or move up but that is kind of the cream of the crop for this draft at this point. The Nets pick could get the Rockets someone like a Tari Eason, Kendall Brown, Nikola Jovic, Jeremy Sochan or maybe even a Walker Kessler or Montero or Wesley. I think the Rockets will likely need to move up 3-4 spots from the Nets pick to get the guy they decide they want in that second tier or prospects. Tari Eason and Kendall Brown have more upside than most guys in that part of the draft, but they have some bust potential. If the Rockets get a guard with their first round pick in the lottery, we may see them go after someone like Kessler..... however if we take a Chet or Smith or Banchero; then we may see them take a point guard like Montero or try to get Ty Typ Washington or Kennedy Chandler.
Draft the skinny guy that may break in half and miss a lot of games so you a have a better chance of getting another top 3 pick for being cheap and incompetent in 2023. Then you can draft another skinny guy (Victor Wembanyama) that may break in half. Rinse, repeat, so genius.
You just made sad I can totally see this front office doing that and then with Holmgen being the sexy unicorn pick, them falling in love with him. The upside is I think any of the 3 could be a huge piece on a championship team and they all could mesh well with anybody, after those 3 i think there is a bit of feast or famine with other top 10 picks and I would love the guy who has the best play making ability. This is the reason i like Banchero so much he has shown me some play making I did not know he had and has not been in a hurry to put up shots I know this is sacrilegious to say, but he looks like Lebron 1.0 he just does not have the freak athleticism or the genius level play making, but I think he could be an above average playmaker especially if given NBA type space. I know defense would be suspect but i would love to him and Alpi torturing bigs in a 2-man game at select moments in a game.
Banchero could be attractive for the Rockets because he should be good right away and that might excite ownership. I will say this, if the Rockets take Banchero we will likely target an elite defensive guard and wing. I think Ivey could end up being the best player in this draft. He has a lot of good traits. He is very athletic, he is long, he is very aggressive and he is stuck on a team with terrible spacing so he doesn't get to show how good he can be. He is someone I compare to Donovan Mitchell.
No. You have no clue. Banchero comps have been anywhere from a more athletic Boozer to Julius Randle. You found one stat where Paolo isn’t behind Chet, good job. Now do the rest
Also, Paolo hasn’t shown more at a high level than Chet has. You have no idea what you’re even talking about.
I’m crazy for repeating that Chet has been compared to KG and KD and hyperbolic in praise, yet you just compared Paolo to Lebron. He has shown nothing outside of size to be compared to Lebron. You’re delusional.
You might be right ... but ... I would be happy with a tall 3 (Brown, 6-8), 3/4 (Jovic, 6-10) or even a 5 (Kessler, 7-1). The Rocket's 6-6 or less 3s and 4s make me sad.
